I was home in Lancaster CA. Too sick to go to kindergarten, but able (after the school bus left)to play in front of the TV. I still remember seeing it and the funeral coverage later on. Sad stuff.

I was in the service stationed at NavComSta85 Hawaii. I was in crypto room decoding top secret messages. A hush came over the room and one of the guys said, this is got to be a joke. Some else said, No, it is true because I have the message from the Commander of the Pacific Fleet in my hand. It was total shock. No one had much to say the rest of the day except, I just can't believe he is dead. Very sad time for everyone.

It was a rainy day in Arkansas also because we were rained out on the construction job and some of us had a card game going. Man that news took the fun out of the card game real quick, everyone was glued to the television at once.
President Kennedy had been here where I live just one month before, he was dedicating the completion of the Dam that formed the Lake here. They just had the 40th year celebration for that also. scrapiron

I was in PE class in 7th grade, Dresden Elementary School, ne Atlanta, Ga. PE Teacher had gone inside, then came back out to class to tell us what had just happened. A bunch of us guys really got mad!! And frustrated as well, because we knew we could not do anything. Like everyone else, next few days were pretty much glued to tv. It was a sad day in the U.S.A. I hope it never happens again.

I was 15 at the time and was just taking an interest in politics. Even with being raised in a Republican conservative home, I can still remember the ribbing my dad took from shocked Republican relatives when he told them that he voted for John Kennedy. At that time my father said that he believed that JFK "was the best man for the PEOPLE" and that LBJ "was a poor choice for a VP".

I always looked at my dad as being a tough old buzzard but that evening as we watched it all on TV, that was the first and ONLY time I ever saw my father break down and cry. This tragic event hit my dad hard. After that, no Republican relative EVER again dared say a negative word about JFK in the presents of my father.

Years later, when I was able to understand politics better, I learned that my Republican dad was right. JFK was a PEOPLE'S president. It was then that I understood why my dad voted for the Man and not the Party.

Another president whom we came close to losing from yet another assasination attempt was Ron Reagan. As rare as it was/is for any hardcore Republican to quote a Democrat (or vice versa), Reagan often quoted Kennedy because of the deep respect and beliefs he had for the man.

In my opinion, these two men together would have made a formidable team. They were both good at their job. But, they were of a different time.
