Well, I made up my mind and decided to get the 2517 base station with the mods and special magic done as Big Bob suggested. I'll be busy making a place for this radio on my desk.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

The 2517 is a real nice radio. Had one for a while. Sold it to buy a Lincoln.

Ha, that was good. You did help convince me for sure. I had to e-mail back to Copper because the confirmation e-mails show me ordering two 2517. One without mods and the other with it. I hope I get the right one! I backspaced to correct something and that's how the two orders happened.
Anyway, I look forward to broadcasting on this fine radio.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have arranged everything at my desk for the DX2517. It's in the mail. I have also made up a quaility jumper to go between it and the tvi filter.

Well, I got the dx2517 and talked for hours on it. I talked to at least 3 radio operators who had one just like it. All I can say is this thing drew a lot of attention and got wonderful reports. I can truly say it has the best ears of any radio I have ever owned. The echo/time actually appears to add loudness to your audio. I don't see how this thing could ever handle an power mike. It doesn't appear that I will be needing any extra help to get out. Another thing, this radio is huge! Anyone thinking about buying one had better reserve a two foot wide table to set it on. It's a beautiful radio. Just what I wanted. I should have bought it in the first place and forgot about the Lincoln (sorry) and the Klv 250. Oh well, that's what happens when we wade first and swim later. Should have take the dive months ago.

I now own a fine antenna in the Thunder 8xb and a fine base radio in the dx 2517. No golden screwdriver will ever enter it's case and that I am sure of. Thanks Copper for doing a great job on the radio. Great tune up.

Hey Mike:

What is the SSB output Wattage as measured by you on the new base radio? Will it reach me in California, like your mobile?

Ca346,mine avg.32 ssb peak 42,mike gain and rf power all the way up and if Mike decides to add a klv 1000-p later he'll have a kool 600 out,by the way Mike I use a tug-9 stand with a d-104 for skip work and the 10-dal for rag-chewing,I like the d-104 because it cuts through the junk.Just crack open the mike amp to stock levels, but let me say this,it doesn't matter where you put it,it won't over modulate or distort,because,hehe,307 IS that good.Bigbob.

Mikeforms glad to hear you like your new radio, it is a beauty isn"t it, and you will have a lot of fun with her, remember to cover her at night to prevent Dust on her , or for her to catch a cold.she sure has a lot of Knobs up front doesn"t she.

I'm glad to hear you like the Galaxy. I will never part with mine. That radio REALLY sounds good on SSB with the 10-DAL microphone. People always say I sound just like a Kenwood or Yaesu. I also really like the received audio--it sounds nice and stout.

The radio is an attention getter. I get more calls from distant station than ever before and the compliments keep coming in. How could you not like this radio? It has so many features.

I really don't know how many watts I put out on ssb. It slaps all the way to the right which is more than 22 watts. The stock mike seems to be just fine for this radio with the built in pre-amp mic. I'm able to pull weak mobiles out that others cannot hear in my area on other radios.

I'm sure it will talk to California when the conditions are there.

Also, I talk a lot on channel 1 these days. Try 1, 39 on the am. It's good to know there is another copper forum member here in Mississippi. There is one more person I know of. Maybe we can make contact. I go by Sunking on the am and unit 48. If you call me CEF 171 I'll answer to that also.

I'm loving it guys.

Got to hear the dx2517 for myself out about 10 miles in the mobile. Man, what loud and clear moduation. The signal stayed up. Also, there's a guy about 15 miles away on an A-99 and says I go into the edge of the red on him. That's pretty good for a barefoot radio to a groundplane 15 miles away the way the crow flies.

My only problem is having enough time to talk on it as much as I'd like!

Karatebutcher,

I remember when your wife told you to do that with your radio.

I hear you drove from CA to NY and she did not tell you to stop so you turned around and came back.

Oh, while you were gone she had us all out for a party and we had a GREAT TIME while you were gone.

It was sad when you called from New York on the phone and said HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
can you hear me now?

Waiting for Net tomorow BUD!

Jim: Do you know if the 6KV6a is the original tube for that amp. I have a booklet on the blackcat modulators, this is what it shows:

The JB12 had a 6AQ6 for the keying tube, the power tube was a 6BQ5.

The JB150 had a 6AQ6 keying tube, and a 8417 for final.

Those are the only ones that showed the keying tube.
The JB200 had transistor keying, and 2-8417 finals.

They made another little modulator I believe it was a JB76, but I don't have the tubes for it.

My wife is such a good sport about my radio hobby. She says she happy to see me enjoying things.

I had a stroke of luck yesterday. I checked the powermike (d-104 handheld) I had bought for the JCPenny mobile (now in the closet) and it works perfectly on my DX2517! Not that I needed it but I have modulation to spare. It's nice to be told to turn it down a little.

Oh, I also learned something else yesterday. I checked to see if I would interfere with my TV in the bedroom. I used to tear it up pretty good on 2 and 4, but I didn't bother at all with the cb on channel one and it was not nearly as noticeable on channel 39 as it was with the Lincoln. Maybe the base has better filters or it could be the additional grounding I have done. Anyway, maybe my mother-n-law next door can walk her tv in peace and I can talk in peace without worrying about bothering anyone. It's nice to be a loud motorscooter and not bleed too badly.

This radio doesn't need a powermike.
