I have a local ham friend, due to advancing age, is selling out most of his shack and just keeping a little for himself. He wants to sell me his Icom 718, for $250, as he knows I am studying for my general, he said it would be a good starter radio. Other than some dust from sitting on his table, there isn't a scratch on it. Said it was not used much because he had several other radios, and always had to bring the manual out to use it because he would forget how to program it. He said it hadn't been modded for 11 meters but would receive it but told me where to find the information, if I wanted to mod it for transmit, as 11 meters is all I use now. I believe he had a speech processor or something like that put in it plus something else that I don't recall, but no AM filter. Has anyone used this radio, heard if it has performance issues, and if it worth the $250. Thanks, Spiderleggs |

It's a pretty nice looking radio, and sells new for around $500, minus additional filters and accessories. I have heard good things about them. I don't believe it has FM, unless he installed that, but it does have CW, SSB AM and RTTY. If it were me, I would jump all over that one!!! Alsworld |

Thanks guys. I went ahead and got it, seems to be a good radio. He went through some steps on how to operate it and it works well. Now to tackle the general and code. |
