Hey guys, I have recently found a Cobra 148 GTL that is brand new in the box, still in the plastic, never even looked at until I opened the box a few weeks ago. It appears to be from around 1978 as that is the only dates I could find in any of the literature that it came with. The original box it is in is a real funky orange and looks like something straight out of the seventies. Every cord and mount and screw and nut is still in the bag and it has never even seen daylight. I'm not lying, this thing is absolutley new. Can anybody give me an idea to what it might be worth. I don't really want to sell it, but it would be nice to now for insurance resons. Also, would any mods lower the value? I mean internal simple mods, like a little power tweak or the pin 10 on the PLL mod. Just curious, thanx everybody.

Buck,

You be sneaky like me.

I never really liked adding switches to mobile's so I always installed an extra Plug right next to PA Plug and ran the plugs into them and NO Visiable / ugly switches, and just unplug jumper with switches and no one knew.

Plug one switch into PA Jack and other switch to other Jack

As I never used PA anyway so I use it for one plug/switch (after re-wiring), it makes it nice & clean with only one small extra Jack on back of radio.

Made jumper's out of 4 strand wire, Like for Auto Trailer wiring, 2' long and added 2 switches to one end and other end with plugs.

Work's GREAT!

Yea those extra switches make the radios ugly...I just used some extra wire I had in my parts drawer and ran the wires from the PLL out the back through the pre-existing hole to my switches. I had my switches mounted to my desk. Unless someone actually looked at the back of the radio where the wires were coming out they couldnt tell anything was different. It worked great as a base...Man I wished I hadnt sold that 148. Best base I ever had....Well until now. My wife got me a Copper bought, 2 month old, chipswitched Lincoln!!! Now if I could only get her to let me have it now. She says I have to wait until Santa comes. That dosent sound very fair to me. Maybe with the Lincoln I wont be such a MUD DUCK and I will be able to make the trip to you Lon...If not maybe new KLV base will be in store :) Well now you got me dreaming and Im rambling so I will hang it up for now

Keep that 148 stock. An old 148 like that should stay in original condition. It's not everyday you come across one of those untouched. You truely have a gem there!

Hey Triple C guy. Don't do anything to that radio. I tell you what I would like to see. Any chance you can take pictures of it and put it on the website? I bet the weight of that radio is tremendous. I still have two radios from the seventies, a Browning 40 channel mobile that is heavy and a Tram 23 channel mobile that is heavy.
If you decide you want to sell it, let me know. But I think if you could put pictures of it, the box, etc,for everyone to see, that would be neat!

I never did think using 2 switches was a very nice way to channel out a 148, skips and misses plus not too many downstairs channels.
Go with an Expo 100 L kit........40 uppers and 40 lowers and professional as can be.

Ok guys, I guess if you REALLY want me to, I could post some pictures. Give me a day or two and I'll see what I can do. I will send them to the Forumaster and let him post them the way he sees fit. And yes, it is a heavy radio. This thing is BIG!!! And the coolest thing of all is that it still smells new, everyone knows that fresh, out of the box electronics smell that all new gear has. I guess this unit was given from one guy to the next and sat in a cabinet in a guys house for like the last 20 years or so with out ever being exposed to anything but room temperature and no light at all. Thanx for the info, but I am still curious what it would be worth. Thanx everybody!!!

That 148 is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. If their are 148's being sold on ebay for $250, there is no reason why yours shouldn't bring that or maybe even more. That is if left in the original packaging and not opened up and tampered with. It wouldn't hurt to fire it up. Just don't start turning the golden screwdriver on it. I would try to use as much other stuff on the radio as possible. Things like a microphone, power cord, ect., from many other cobra or uniden mobiles will work just fine. This way you can preserve the original stuff in it's packaging. Also, stay away from mounting the microphone hanger clip. When removed, the mounting holes tend to look tackey.

just my thoughts
