The switchable pre-amp in the KL-200P seems like a nice feature, but the KL-203 appears to the the popular choice. From the online description, the KL-203 can seem to take a slightly greater input. Is there a difference in the reality of using these amps? In real power output? The small size, modest power output and current draw of these amps are appealing. Which would be best for a Magnum 257? For all modes? Of course I'm open to suggestion. What modest amp do you like?

I have the KL 203 and love it. I did not get the KL 200P as I was concerened with having problems with the pre-amp and since I run it with a Magnum Delta Force the receive is sensitive enough for me without one.
For the price and size and power output and ease of use I cannot find a nicer little amp.
They require a low dead key so make sure the 257 can meet this requirement. They are not considered by some to be very durable but my son mistakenly dead keyed my Delta Force on high power (10-12 watts) twice and talked for about a second each time and the amp is still working fine. Of course I made sure he understood to never do that again and maybe I just got lucky but the amp is working fine. I have shot skip from New Hampshire to Texas, Arkansas, Florida, etc. on both SSB and AM. The reports back are the radio sounds greats, nice and loud and clear.
I have looked at bigger amps but the added price does not justify the power.
I will be buying another in the future for my wifes car once I talk her into it.

Pointman back quiet...

Pointman,I mean no disrespect, but 14 years ago if you could find a mobile amp USED for a buck and a half a watt, you were darn lucky, the prices have come down considerably since then and sometimes you can buy 2 for the pice of one,if the kl203 has 2 sd1446 pills in it,it can take high drive momentarily with no ill effects,it is a stout little amp.Bigbob

Hello Bigbob,
None taken,
I am confused about your post. I am only speaking compliments about the 203 in terms of price, performance, and reliability.
I have read on many forums about it being a "throw away" and very fragile but have found that to be the exact oposite in real life use.
Next to a Magna Force 350 it is bang for the buck IMHO as good as it gets.
If I came across differently it was not my intent and I apologise, lack of sleep varies the human language in writing lol....
Pointman is on the side and off to bed lol...

That's me,mr. confusion, lol;I wasn't criticising you,I've heard that said of the palomar 250 as far as being throw away, the 250 is 99$ 15 years ago you couldn,t find one up here for less than 375$,BIG drop in price, but the little sd1446 pills are hardier than the old mrf455 tablets,oh by the way the kl-500 has 4-sd1446 pills.Bigbob

Even more confusion, the 300p is the one with 2 pills, heck what you have would be an excellant driver for a txstar dx1200 or 1600,the 300p is probably better than my pal.250 and 40$ cheaper,I got my pal. from copper 3 years ago.Bigbob

There were quality issues with the Kl amps when they first came out, rather than fragility issues. A friend of mine sells them, and now he opens every one and checks the solder points before he sells them. Maybe he just got a bad batch, but in the first case he ordered he had to work on 3 of them. I love my Dave's made!

I hear you Bigbob,
I like the looks of the 300p also, I went with the 203 due to a tight budget, 4 kids and all lol...
I realy like these KL amps but I would still love to drive a sweet Magna Force someday lol...
My wife thinks I am crazy now.
It is a great hobby though.
300p or MF 350...a decisions decisions, maybe both, maybe something else lol...
73's,
Point
