I think it is very rude. This morning at Dennys a jerk starts talking on his nextel in the next booth with the volume turned up.......I work for a living and I leave my nextel in the truck during lunch. Some people just don't have any manners or respect for others.
How did these morons survive the 70s, 80s-early 90s when cell phones and commercial handhelds didn't exist???????????

I'll agree Sparky...I live in a college town and have always wondered how the little blondes driving daddys BMW or Mercedes that cut you off in traffic while chatting away on their phone ever made it thru school.

The "MOST" Dangerous vehicle on the road in Atlanta, GA is a woman driving a suburban and talking on her cell phone! Enough said!

I think so. Used to it was rude to talk on a phone when you had company. Now days every other car you pass on the road the person has their right hand glued to their ear. They are supposed to be using the CB.

well according to the " rude " folks, it is OK for THEM to use their cell phone, but a lousy move for any one else to do it ( for what ever reason )...something like SPEEDING down the highway; my reason should keep me from getting a ticket, but YOUR reason aint good enuf. WHY CANT WE JUST ALL GET ALONG ?

I agree with evryones post. I don't know how many times I have nearly been run off the road because some jerk was to busy talking on his cell phone to pay attention to his\her driving.

The original qustion was "Is it rude to talk on a cell phone in a restaraunt?" My opinion is depends. When I was traveling (alot) I used a cell phone everywhere in and around an airport including the restaraunts in the airports. It was very common, and not offensive to anyone. BUT, I would never use it when going out to dinner that night. UNLESS, I was expecting a very important call. But if that call came in, I excused myself and went outside. So... it depends...

Guess it depends on the place. I'd expect to hear people using cellphones in diners, fast food joints, Dounkin Donuts and the like as you generally wouldn't go to one of those places for a quiet evening out.

I find the Nextel two way annoying even in the above places. How would those Nextelers like it if I sat down next to them and started talking to truckers with my Cherokee walkie talkie?

IT depends. Several years back I worked forAustralian Emergency Services and as such was on 24/7/365 call. Yes I carried my pager and phone BUT if either beeped I'd excuse myself and walk out to the foyer to respond..

BY the same token , doctors, police and many others may need to be able to be contacted at short or no notice but it still can be done with discretion and consideration.

Good point Ozzie about police, et al. I'm sure none of us would be bother by an EMT answering a cellphone or two way to respond to an emergency.

The calls that tend to bring up the rude flag are those calls to boyfriends/girlfriends, spouses, friends, ect that simply could wait until later. Cellphone users wouldn't want restaraunts or movie theaters to have payphones in the middle of the dining or viewing area what makes the cellphone different?

This morning a 75 year old woman crashed her Chevy Suburban through the front window of a convienence store. She was asked what happened and said she didn't know because she was on the cell phone. That storefront could have just as easily been a school bus stop.

Well I really don't see what the problem would be with someone using a "cellphone" in a restraunt but I think what sparkomatic is talking about is a nextell 2 way feature on a cell phone which is annoying because it constantly "beeps" like a roger beep and it also is not a very private way to communicate unless you have the volume turned way down then it is still annoying because of the beep. But as for using cell phones at a restraunt I don't see any problem with that. Just because I am a truck driver and I am used to eating at restraunts that have phones at almost every booth.

common sense left just before the year 2000... and now we have cell phones ringing in restaurants, chruches, funerals, etc. to justify our ignorance/intelligence. Turn the contraption OFF or leave it at another location so you wont miss your calls. Treat others like you want to be treated. That goes a long, long way.
