I have talked with several people stating they were ###, "portable" or "mobile". Now mobile to me means installed in a vehicle and it's MOBILE. Portable to me means it's a HANDHELD radio. But almost everyone I talk to it means the same thing (MOBILE). Is this common usage outside California???

Just asking...bobman3

CA346, I don't know if this applies everywhere or not, but when I first started on the radio, and it was before sideband, CBer's said they were mobile, meaning in their vehicle, they still use that term on AM. Then when sideband came along and got popular, there were some of them that didn't want to use any so called cb language, so they started using the term "portable", meaning they were mobile of course. I've never understood why some people think they have to use a complete different language on sideband, but they sure do it, QSL?? haha, man thats one I get tired of hearing. But thats just one of my pet peeves, another is these people with their calls, heck most make up their own, why would you have four letters, four numbers, throw the State in there, then add station so-and-so, and maybe operator joe on top of that. Sheesh, by the time they sang all that out, the conditions have changed, someone is covering them up, and i've gone to another frequency. Yeah, I know, i'm old and cranky.

Scrap:

I'm with you. Seems like the longer I listen to Channel 38, the more irritating it gets sometimes!! But I have met some of the nicest people out there in radio land... It must be worth the hassal! PLUS where else can you find so many people all in love with our hobby and want to talk about it??

Portable use to meen your operating from a fixed location other than your licensed location.... you would sign here in florida CEF132/4 telling the fcc you were not at home but in the 4th call district or CEF132/2 if you were in new york .......mobile was just that installed in a car...... any other use was incorrect.

One needs to listen to who says it...
"I'm in the portable" or
"I'm on the portable" or
"In the mobile"

It all has to do with how the terminology is used.

I found this story it touches on the old requirement to report when you were not at your location " PORTABLE" you will still hear people sign wX4axxx/4 the term STROKE 4... it was a requirement then.....

"In 1974, logging requirements were eased. The only information still required was the calls of stations worked, the starting and ending dates, and any third-party traffic. Many hams still kept detailed logs, but it was no longer required by law. Requirements for portable and mobile operation were eased during this time period, as well. No longer would it be necessary to notify the FCC when operating portable or mobile for extended periods."
