I posed this question in the ASK THE TECH section, but they must all be on vacation this week? :) So I thought you could help.

I am the very proud owner of a pre-owned COPPER KL-500. I have read the spec sheets (there are 3) and it says 1-15W AM input and 2-30W SSB input. I am using an ICOM706MKIIG with this station. I can get my power down to 1 or 2 Watts.

My question is what is the OPTIMUM INPUT WATTAGE for this amp? I never plan on really using 100% of the capability. Probably never more than 50%.

CA346,

http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/checkitout/checkitout.cgi?catalogSTORE:CKIE:prodW90-KLV500+

This calls for 4 watts, On the ones I have used I found I got the best results with 2 1/2 Watts DEAD Key / Unmodulated Carrier.

Sorry it took so long to find this but with 700 to 900 post's a week, to read and approve it takes us a little while to try and find things.

CA346, I bet the best advise for running that radio into that low drive amp is, "VERY CAREFULLY". Ha, doesn't that Icom do about 100 watts sideband on 11 meters. Of couse I guess you can turn it down pretty low, just don't forgot, huh. But then I know you don't have oldtimers as bad as I do.

Thank you Lon, I'm sorry I'm so impatient. I get testy sometimes as we all do. Course my wife just tells me to ""go talk on the radio or something, just anywhere else!""

I am finding by having people give me feedback on the air on how it sounds, that 20W SSB input is near the optimum input to the amp for my radio so far?

The last time I checked it, he said I was "cachinking" once in awhile when the relay was kicking on and off? I had it (ICOM) set at 10W SSB and increased it to 20W to stop that problem. I just don't want to overdrive it. It is a wonderfull quality amp compared to my other one (GALAXY350) in the shop/garage.

At 20W SSB input, stage 2 is giving me about 180W out. What fuses does this amp take? I need to have some on hand for back-up.

Also, does COPPER sell fans for adding to the KL-500? If not, I know where I can get them here in California. I just hate to pay the sales tax...

BigBob:

With the mikegain at high it doesn't give your voice a splatter signal? Have you checked and gotten feedback from someone you trust that will give you reliable audio feedback?

I usually keep the mikegain at 6 on all my radios. Maybe I should rethink that?

Scrap:

I have indeed forgotten to turn the power back UP, when I turned it down, but not yet forgotten to turn it down. Haven't had the amp that long yet.... Besides, I'm hoping to set this thing once and leave it alone...

Still tweaking...

Ca346,307 worked on this one before I got it,I used to run it at 9 o'clock,rf wide open on ssb 30watts in,404 out amp got warm, now amp stays cool.404 was more or less constant now 438 is just a high peak,avg.386,and I can't find enough room for the flowers I been getting,my friends asked me what I did to clean it up,so I told them and I said I got the info at copper forum, they said they would check it out.You see I didn't know that the rf knob effected power on ssb to,on my eagle 2000 it does not,so I turned the mike gain up and let the amc do it's job and turned the rf down to 2 so as not to over work the alc,it worked no more fuzz on my received audio, and I'm still LOUD,HEHEHE.If you want blistering performance, buy your rig at copper and state you want 307 to work his magic.I told him no price was to small, but he charged the standard rate, only at Copper can you have your cake and eat it too,my hat is off.Bigbob
