which of these radios are the better and more reliable of the two?? which one can be tuned up to put out more watts and better modulation??? one is the first style with battery back-up and second one is newer style with-out. both are rci-2950's

there is no difference between these 2 except the cpu. the main board is the same. the dx model is where the differences start.

Neither would be my first choice, but between the two, I'd rather have the new DX model. I had an older style one, and they are very good radios for the money. The DX is an upgrade, but doesn't correct some deficiencies. I'd rather have a lincoln, magnum 257, or Omega force than a 2950dx, but I wouldn't kick one out of the shack if it showed up!

highlander,

i think that he is referring to the 'through hole' 2950's. there are 2 versions of these. those with the 'through hole' cpu, and those the smt cpu. both use the same main board, so rf wise there is no difference between one or the other.

comptech,

i forgot to add earlier that with the proper tuning, the dx versions will do a little more power. the non-dx (regardless of cpu version)will do around 35wpep, where the dx's can do around 45wpep.

I used to own one of the early 2950 and had great luck with it. Everyone said it sounded very good, good audio very clean. Then I got hard up for money and sold it but then I bout it back about 6 years later still in the same shape it was in when I sold it now it will never leave me agian.
I had it in a pick-up truck with a 102" whip and a boomer 250 High drive and was not any place I tried to talk I had to call twice. But this is just my opion based on what I had. The new 2950's they told me were not as clean a sounding radio as the older version's. But I would say they have probably made quite a difference in them by now.

Yeah I had a 2950 back in Australia. One of many radios sold to pay immigration costs. Wish I still had it and the IC706.
