Marlboro man, I would suggest you go to QRZ.com, and take the practice tests, they have them for all the licenses. |

Marboro and others, There are three different classes of amateur license: Technician, General, and Extra. The General class license will get on 10 meters. Go to QRZ.com and click on the link for Practice Test. You will also need to pass the 5wpm code test. Go to ARRL.org and there should be a link near the top that takes you to a EXAM schedlue page where you can put in the state or area you live in and see local testing schedules. Good Luck. |

Re Marlboro_man Places to go... Top of the list the local ham radio club. Attend a meeting and ask around. They will give you tips on how to study for he code requirement and other tips and tricks not published in the books. Other locations... You can go to the ARRL web site and download the question pool for tech license for free. MAKE SURE you have lots of ink and a bunch of paper. Better yet, you can order from the ARRL book department their license manual with code disc. www.arrl.org For 10 meters you will still need 5 wpm code at this time. Another place is the W5YI web site. They sell license manuals for all the licenses and the code programs as well. OHH and one more thing.... The Question pool for the General Class will be upgraded beginning July 1st 2004. MORE QUESTIONS will be added to the pool. Might I suggest that you also order the General Class manual and go immediately to the General Class BEFORE you have to memorize even more and probably more difficult questions. If you have any goals to go all the way to Extra you might want to rush those as well. The NEW an pobably harder Extra Class Question pool is penciled to go into effect July 1st 2006 In short go as fast and far as you can before they crush you with questions. NOTE! DE, I changed the name at top as somehow Marlboro_man's post got messed up and I posted it for him. I already have my ticket. Lon Tech808

Here is a really good start. It has a list of the countries and their callsign prefixes, a list of the typical use of each portion of tach band, and a chart of the bands and what modes (CW, SSB, etc) you can use and what license you need. http://www.icomamerica.com/downloads/bandchar.pdf Also, on the VHF SSB bands (6 meters,2 meters, etc) you will hear hams talk about their grid square. Here is a grid square map: http://www.icomamerica.com/downloads/usgridsq.pdf

I like to see the interest in 10 meters here. It is a logical step for many folks from CB, especially since many folks here have the equipment they need to operate on 10 anyhow. Darn it, if only Tech class operators had 10 meter privelidges! I think if more folks could get a taste of HF operations they would be inclined to upgrade to get on 20, 40 and so on. Unfortunately, one has to take three steps to get 10 meter privelidges. Tech, Tech+ and then General because from what I understand, if you wait too long to take the element 3 you have to retake the 5wpm code test. |

Actually there are only three classes of amateur radio licenses still being issued by the FCC: Technician, General, and Amateur Extra. The older license classes (Novice, Technician Plus, Advanced) remain valid and can be renewed, but no new licenses will be issued in those classes. While you have to take and pass the Technician test before advancing to the General test, it can all be done at the same testing session. If you pass the Technician and General written tests, you will earn a no-code Technician license and receive a certificate for the General class written test. The certificate is good for one year. Pass the 5 word per minute (wpm) code test within that period and you will not have to retake the General test - just give the examiner the certificate proving you already passed it. The same is true if you pass the morse code test but flunk the General written test. You will get a certificate good for one year showing you have passed the morse code test. Either way you have one year to study and take the remaining test. The cost for taking the tests is around $15 per testing session. As long as you continue to pass the various written exams, you can take all four tests (Technician, General, Amateur Extra, and morse code) during the same testing session, paying just the $15 fee once. It costs the same whether you take just one test or all three. I recommend that you at least attempt the General class test after passing the Technician. It will give you an ideal of what to expect on the next test. Who knows, you might even pass it! Always worth a shot, and it doesn't cost extra. The Technician license grants you access to all the various VHF/UHF/SHF/EHF ham bands above 30 MHz. The General class license gives you all of the Technician priviledges, plus access to almost all portions of the HF ham bands. The only frequencies excluded are the few frequency ranges restricted to Amateur Extra license holders. For the most part, the General class license gives you the most bang for the buck when getting into ham radio. |

No Novice, Tech+ or advanced anymore. Starts at Tech no-code to general to extra. Wish they had left the tech plus for 10 meters or given it to tech no-codes for a taste of H.F. |
