Does anyone have any recommendations on a well made radio? I am looking for an AM/SSB radio that can be modified for extra channels, power, and modulation. In a sense, I'm looking for a Cobra 148, but it's hard to find one that's not butchered up. So, if there is an equal that is made, please let me know. Thanks, GIJOE |

If you can still find the Uniden XL or LT radio they are reall nice radios...check around on some of the online auctions. If you wanted to go w/an export radio you can get a RCI2950/dx or President Lincoln or a VOYAGE VR 9000 etc.... all these radios offer good quality features and have am/ssb. Good Luck with your radio search! **Remember get the features you want in a radio...instead of a truck stop special radio....then later SPENDING more money$ on modifying a cheaper quality radio. I learned the hard way....and so did my wallet$$..lol...lol |

Go for the gold. Get that powerful, channel expansive, Galaxy 95T. Don't play around with less than the most powerful and newest of the newest if you can afford it. $399 is not bad. Lincoln is in a sense top of the line but I'd trade made in a heartbeat for a 93T 95T. mikefromms |

If your looking for a new, GOOD radio right out of the box, go with the Uniden Grant LT. Better get 1 while they last! Uniden stopped manufacturing these. Copper still has them. Check it out! http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/checkitout/checkitout.cgi?catalogSTORE:CKIE:prodP70-05132+ I have one and It's a very good radio! It offers you all the features the 148 does plus GOOD quality to back them up! stickshift |

If you are looking for a radio with good power, all the channels you'll ever need, and a price that won't put a serious dent in your pocket my choice would be a Magnum 257. It doesn't have the look of the 148, but it is a solid performer. Check it out here. http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/checkitout/checkitout.cgi?catalogSTORE:CKIE:prodP03-01000+ A decent mike wouldn't hurt either. The stock ones lack in the audio quality a bit. If you've got an extra one around try it out. I've found that a noise cancelling type works the best in mobile applications. An Astatic 575-M6 will give you good reseluts on base applications and mobile if adjusted properly. Hope this helps! stickshift

But consider the big face s-unit meter on the Galaxy as opposed to the others. I would spend $200 more on a radio just to have the big meters as opposed to the tiny on meters or bar code meters. That's what I hate about the Lincoln. Otherwise a good radio. mikefromms |

I agree with stickshift...If you can live without the looks of the 148...Go with the Mag 257...Best bang for the buck radio out there....And they sound good Buck |

I'm partial to my DX93T. Copper's price for the 95T is GREAT. That's less than the 93T!!! PLUS you'll never need any extra power. Whatever your choice get the 6 digit counter it is worth it's weight in gold, especially in the mobile. 73's Ron |

Well, here are my Suggestion's of the Top Three Mobile Radio's I have owned & used over the last 28+ years in Radio. #1 ~ The "NEW" RF Limited / Magnum Omega Force S45 Rated *****++ This "NEW" Radio has Everything (ALL THE BELL's and WHISTLE's) anyone could ever want and only needs P&T & Opened for 11 meter. I am having a hard time thinking about putting it in Mobile, as also works Great as Base on Power Supply. #2 ~ Ranger / Voyage VR9000 (No Mic gain, But after over a year of useing them, it does not need it!) Rated ***** Also has Everything and Only needs P&T & Opened for 11 Meter. Still have and use 2 of them every day, and has Good Power. #3 RF Limited / Magnum 257 Rated **** Again only needs P&T & Opened for 11 Meter Very good all around Radio. NOTE! (Never owned this one but used one for a month.) Just my 2 cent's worth. Lon Tech808 |

Always get what you really want the first time even if you have to tighten the belt a little. If you really want a 95T get it. mikefromms |

Well since I got my omegaforce a couple months ago, thats a little early for xmas, maybe I need to ask santa for the Galaxy 95T. ;>). I've also been looking for news about the proposed S-9 from Magnum and/or Galaxy. I've found pictures of it on the internet, but nothing else yet. If it comes from Magnum maybe it would have the topgun modulator and the extra power, now that would be awesome. |

Hey everyone, Thanks for all the info. I can feel confident that the list of radios on this post is probably the best of the best for my application. Now, it's just a matter of figuring out what bells and whistles I want. Tech808, Can you give me a freq range for the first two choices you listed (11 meter). Can anyone tell me what the differance is between the Galaxy 93 & 95. Thanks again everyone. Joe |

Joe, As all three are 10 Meter radio's, and all three will cover well below and well above the Regular 40 CB Channels. Check the Frequency Chart Under "Tools" Listed to the left of the forum here and you will have most of the coverage listed. To compare the 93T to the 95T check the links below: http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/checkitout/checkitout.cgi?catalogSTORE:CKIE:prodG10-00013+ http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/checkitout/checkitout.cgi?catalogSTORE:CKIE:prodG10-00015+ Lon Tech808 |
