I have just purchased a Magnum 257dx from Copper and I am having a heck of a time finding a place to mount the radio. I own a 2003 Ford Ranger extended cab and there is no place to mount the rig!?!? I installed the antenna (Maxrad NMO on a hood channel mount) but for the life of me I cannot locate a suitable location in the cab. I tried fabricating a bracket so it would go where the ashtray is, no joy there... The truck is a stick shift. Any ideas?

manwich,

Do you have a console between the front seats?
I have found that mounting the radio on the pasenger side of the console vertically gave easy access and was out of the way.
Hopes this gives a usful idea.

I have the "60/40" seat combination. I am thinking of bolting the ashtray in place and mounting the radio to it. I suppose I could mount it to the glove box... My last cb was mounted on the dash of a Ranger, but she had 200,000 miles on her and I'm not exactly excited about drilling through the dash of my new rig.

What i did is drill holes in the very corners of the ashtray itself, im not familiar witht the radio you bought, but if its heavy or you hit a bump the ashtray will lower alittle, but the upside is if you get tired of the CB or sell the truck you can just get a new ashtray. Now my question for you is, where did you go through the firewall for the wiring?

Not sure what the Ranger configuration is like. Do you smoke? If not, remove the ashtray, if you can do so, and put the radio in that location. The 257 is a very good radio that requires very little mounting space. Most ashtrays are about the same size as the 257. The radio fills the spot nicely and requires minimal effort to install. This is the way I installed my Eagle Sidewinder 400 (same size as the Magnum 257) in my 94' Lumina. There were 2 bolts holding the ashtray bracket in place and I simply removed them and fabricated a new bracket for the radio.

Hope this helps!

To mount my 10m and my 2m radios in our new Ranger I made two wooden frames that angled the radios upwards. These frames (made from 5 pieces of 3/8 ply) were made to fit onto the hump between the 5 speed shifter and dash and bewteen the shifter and seat. Two 90 brackets hold each frame onto the hump (two screws each frame into hump. Result a neat tidy installation with minimum damage to truck that if the radios are removed will not be noticable.

Oh yeah for the 2m antenna I drilled a 7/8" hole smack oin the middle of the roof.

My 98 Ranger is about the same. I removed the factory plastic cup holder/console,,,installed a piece of 3/4 plywood that I sanded and stained then attached the radio to it. I run a HR2600 with an amp and ext Cobra speaker all in a pile...works for me.

Thanks for the info and I think I have an idea which will work (bolt the ashtray in place and bolt the radio to the ashtray as suggested). For Redstripe, I found a hole on the drivers side just under the brake pedal and routed my coax through it. Most rangers have at least a few holes in the body through which you can route cable, etc.
