How much money are you lookin to spend??

The Galaxy 2517 is a good radio for the money and has a 5 digit freq counter:

I'm with bruce. Go with the magnum 257. It is a very good radio. At $170 you can buy the radio and if you look around you should be able to find a good used 10 to 14 amp power supply for $20 to $30. That setup will do a very good job with a decent antenna. Plus you can use the radio mobile if you also choose to.

hope this helps

The 139, I'm sure, can be aligned without too much problem (own abilities or good local tech). Adding a VFO (Siltronics) will add what you need as far as the rest of (or more) channels. It'll give you an 'anolog' frequency counter as opposed to digital though.

Another option.

I ssb base with a frequency counter for $150? I doudt it. You might check eBay....but everything of any value will go for more than what you want to spend. I agree with Bruce and Crafter, buy a mobile and a power supply. You'll be money ahead in the long run plus you can always use it moblie.

I wouldnt have one given to me.. :-( You will not like the 2547.. Save your $$$ up over time and get yourself a Good radio like a galaxy melaka, a RCI 2517, or a RCI 2985. You will be soooooo much more happy and you will be less likely to get rid of it in the future because you were not happy with it after the novelty wore off.... Dude, trust me this happens to a lot of guys... One of my first really good radios i had when i was a teenager was a RCI 2950. I had to save and save and save up for it but i had it a long time and was not unhappy with it.. I finally sold it to get a galaxy saturn base because i got tired of talking on a mobile on a power supply... LOL.
Well man, do what you want its your dough but if i were you id steer clear of the 2547...

If you want a good base, I agree with CM3885, save your money and get the Galaxy 2517 or the Ranger. You'll be alot happier. But, if you're on a budge, anyone of these mobiles and a power supply would be cheaper and will work just as good.

http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/product_display.cgi?categories=RADIOS-CB+MOBIL

These are all good suggestions. It's up to you what you want to do. Personally, I prefer a mobile and a power supply. I can't afford those BIG radios. haha :)

Good luck on your purchase......

You want a base? Get yourself a Washington. They are a dime a dozen on ebay and are decent radios. I've had mine for years and it has good audio and recieve. A frequency counter is a nice tool to have, but really isn't necessary. I've been using my siltronix 1011c quite a bit lately and it dosen't have any fancy frequency counter. It doesn't even have a true channel selector. A stock 40 channel radio will provide you with with good results. There are plenty of stations operating on channel 38 these days to keep you busy. If you can live without the counter, I'd give the Uniden Washington a try.

I guess once you have your first nice radio, when the newness wears off you'll want more, better and different, inceased channels;unlocked clarifier;more watts, and you may try to mod that radio, from what I've read it is hard to mod that rig, galaxy made it that way,it's JUST a cb and that's all it will ever be.Bigbob P.S.it's tough when moneys burnin a hole in your pocket

I personally have never been around a 2547 so I cant give you an opinion on that. I personally would get a mobile and a powersupply to use....This would be my first choice

http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/checkitout/checkitout.cgi?catalogSTORE:CKIE:prodP03-01000+

and this

http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/checkitout/checkitout.cgi?catalogSTORE:CKIE:prodT70-00012+

It will cost about $250 with the conversion and shipping but you will have a nice radio and you can put it in the mobile when you upgrade!!

Hey Ratlesnake,.. My first base when I was your age was a Uniden Washington. You can still find several of these around on e bay and from individuals. This is a 40 ch am with ssb and can have an expo kit added for the extra channels. No freq counter but you can always buy an external freq counter later or get a nice set of meters like my Dosy 3001's they have a freq counter built in also. You can find several of these radios with the expo kit (extra channels) already instaled and sometimes a D-104 mike or a set of meters is included!! Anyway I just thought I would throw my iron in the fire and maybee give you another option.

Mikefromms is right I once herd an older gentelman, who had been in radio all his life, say to take what money you have and go buy the best antenna and coax that you can buy. Then take what money is left and buy your radio. If you will think about this there is alot of truth to this statement. I can take a stock radio and hook it up to a quality ant antenna and coax and talk skip!! So, Ratlesnake this is something else for you to think about unless you already have an antenna and coax.

Yes take this advice! get a really good base antenna (I maxx 2000 comes to mind) then worry about that radio! 150.00 will buy you the I maxx 2000(around $100.00 depending on who you get it from) good coax,(about 25 to 40.00 depending on how much you need and what kind you want) and some mast pipe. After you get a good antenna setup then save the $$$ and get a good radio like the 2517, 2985 or whatever you want.

Yes RSJ...Thats a great antenna. One of the best out there. That TR 696F is a fine sounding base station also. I believe that is what 1st Sargent runs on base and from what Ive heard, she loves it.

If you have a maco 5/8 I won't say another word about antennas to you. It's the best metal groundplane for the cb band being produced today. Your focus on radios is justified.

Maco V 58 is a great antenna.
Yeah save your $$$ and get a really good base radio. Which Texas base you wanting? The one that looks like a RCI 2980? I dunno if that one is expanable or not but If you save a little more and get a decent power supplier like a 30 amp or so you can get the Magnum Omego force for around 250.00. Now thats a sweet radio and that would make you a kickin' base setup!!!!!!! Desicions, desicions, desicions.............

You can get a 10 meter radio with the 11 meter conversion. That will allow you to go above and below the regular 40 channels. Just stay below 28mhz (10 meters) and you will be fine.
