Um, why don't you buy a ssb rig?? The CBS-500 is AM only. Modifing it would not be worth the time or money. |

You could buy a good used Grant or Cobra 148 for about $100.00. They both have SSB |

Hey Rattlesnake, It seems you may be confused about sidedband radios and radio's with extra channels. Don't confuse "sideband" with "extra channels"...they're not the same. Without getting too technical and talking over your head, Single Sideband (SSB) involves a method of removing the 4 watt carrier that an AM radio transmits, and a little more stuff and coming up with a upper and lower area around the normal AM channel. For instance, Ch. 13's upper sideband (USB) and lower sideband (LSB) is still a part of Ch. 13-AM. Now, the "bands" or A-B-C-D-E-F switch that some radios have and the "extras" that some people refer to adding to their radios all refer to channels above or below the normal 40 channels. FYI...these channels are technically illegal to possess and use as a CB radio. Finally, if you want to have a radio that will talk on places like Ch 13-LSB where the CEF net takes place every Sunday then you will need a SSB radio. Hope this helps, and welcome to CB radio! :-) |

Like Barefoot said, you can pick up a Grant XL and Cobra 148 very reasonable. They both have ssb. Which is what you will need to operate on the NET on Sundays. |

If you get on LSB and use a AM band handle you will be okay, but most people use a number for LSB. How about CA138? You are in California and your base radio is a Cobra 138? I use CA346. The number came from the State I live in (CALIFORNIA), the Month I was born (MARCH), and the year I was born (1946). OLD HUH? I tried to get my 12 year old grand-daughter to get on the radio with me, but she's too shy. Now the 7 year old grand-daughter can talk the ears off of a long-eared jackrabbit! CA346/CEF197 |
