Im thinking of using RG 8 coax on my mobile antenna and replacing the RG 58 that i use on it. How well will this work? antenna is a wilson 1000 mag mount.

Are you planning on pushing 1000watts through it if not leave it,it'll handle 400watts ssb with no problem.Bigbob

Question.
How are you going to connect the RG8 coax to the magnet?
You will have to make a big hole for that coax to fit, and then connecting it to the mag will be a job.......

Let us know how it works out......

Times Microwave LMR240 is the size of mini 8 and will handle the power of rg8. You will still need to dremel the exit channel of the antenna since the original coax is rg58. This coax can handle 1kw continuous, 2500 pep, more than the load could take. RG8 or 213 can be used, but is quite difficult to work with.

You asked how well will it work???? You will never be able to tell any differance between rg-8 and mini 8.(or rg-58 for that matter) Bruces piont was that it will not work any better than mini 8, no matter what band you talk on. Another thing to think about would be getting the coax routed into the car....you wont run it through the door like alot of people do. Its too big. My own opinion??? Stick with mini 8. Its suited best for mobile installations.

Cm3885 well if it was dumb to mention i must really be dumb because i did it in 2000 in my S10. it has a roof mount antenna with an elbow on the antenna. coax goes from under dash along transmission tunnel (under floor mat) under seat to cab corner and up to roof. no routing problems. it seemed like a good idea at the time. oh well.

Heck yeah,it'll work with a roof mount, but most people use a magnet mount,we just assumed,as he did not state which mounting system he had.Bigbob P.S.with that setup you could run hardline a 16 pill and a wilson 5000,egad!

I just wanted to try it thats all. No harm in that right? I though that it would work better because the RG 8 has less resistance than the RG mini 8 and the RG 58. It might work afterall. I might try it when it gets warmer out and see how much better it will work. It might who knows. One thing might not work for one and then work alright for another. Thats what makes experimenting fun. Too bad more people dont do that anymore....

If you want to try it, go right ahead and do it. That's what the hobby is for, and by the way it will work fine. RG-8, RG-213 and RG-214 just to name a few. Wildbill

Most of the guys that I know who runs big amps use the better grade RG8. By that I mean those that run 1KW or over. Of course it doesn't match any better than the mini 8, but will take the power. Heck i've seen a 1000 watts ran thur rg58 to a wilson 1000 magnet mount for a long time now without any big problems. And another one that beats that, I know a guy right now thats using some heavy 75 ohm coax on his base. When he put his tower and beam up about 2 years ago, he needed a long run of coax, about 200 ft, he didn't have enough RG8, so he used the 75 ohm for about half the run, intending to change it later. Well it matched and works so good, it's still in use, and he is a loud motorscooter. But I guess that Galaxy Saturn and Varmint 600 has something to do with it.
