Dennis,

Are you mounting the radio to the inside of the roof on the headliner, or are you talking about mounting a roof mount antenna?

The overhead storage console would be a great way to mount the radio without drilling holes in your roof. It would also allow you to better hide the power cord and coax. If you install the radio on the overhead shelf you will probably need an external speaker. Mounting the radio underneath the overhead shelf might put the radio in the way of your view out the windshield if it hangs down too low.

Be aware that some overhead storage consoles end up with your sun visors mounted backwards (instead of pivoting right next to the windshield they pivot near the rear edge of the console). This puts them right in front of your face instead of against the windshield.

"Iron Horse" made some overhead consoles that had special brackets so the sun visors mounted close to their original positions. This let them swing down in the normal manner. This feature was mentioned in their advertising.
