I'm thinking about purchasing a Solarcon A99 base antenna for my Cobra 89GTL base. I live in an apartment building that stands 86' tall and I would be mounting the antenna on the roof with 100' of coax running straight down to the radio. I need some opinions about this particular set up. Is the A99 a good antenna? What can I expect from this set up? Thank you. |

well, if there is no grounding rod, i would advise against. Get a maco 5/8 ground plane if there is no ground. |

Yea any antenna that has been around as long as the A99 is good....But if I were you id try the imax 2000. Its a little more expensive than the A99 but its WELL worth the money in my book. Imax 2000 is an awsome antenna Buck |

Rattlesnake A Ground plane is not required to have a ground. You can mount an A-99 in a tree or on a wooden post if you want. |

Been running one for the last 4 years with no problems and pretty good results - over 80 countries during that time running 10w or less. |

i would suggest grounding no matter what with any base situation. those thunderstorms can be brutal on your equipment. a 40' roll of ground cable is like $4 at radshack and im sure you can clamp them together somehow to get the length you need. i usually homebrew my antennas, but if i had to buy, id go with a maco or imax |

P.S. a cut and tuned 1/2 wave dipole will blow that a-99 outta the water |

Hi Team, all the Antrons down here in the South Pacific delaminate and soak in moisture to the extent that they build up a layer of gung/crud corrosion in the tuning section in the base and servere corrosion sets in which inturn throws the A99 out of tune. Many down here had water entering the shack and radio via the inside of their expensive coax even with the anti-drainpipe loop.I would suggest that you use some sort of sealant,a marine laquer/paint to prevent the moisture and the delamination taking effect. Not a good antenna for RX (deaf)/TX out of band even with a tuner. But over all value for money. Happy New Year and best of DX in 2004 to all. CEF195 Kiwi Kid |

Both are good antennas But for your situation I would ground things as much as possible as to not cause problems with the neighbors in your complex. Taz |
