Redwolf, I can beat them all!! My first REAL radio was a Lafayette 100 Milliwatt Walkie Talkie! I was not 18, and FCC rules in 1962 required you to be 18 to have a radio that talked with ONE watt or more. But I thought I was something to have a real walkie talkie! Next step up was in 1973, when I bought my first mobile, a Lafayette HB 525 23 channel mobile. Man, I was in the high rent district then! Happy New Year! Keith in Atlanta |

Hey Scrapiron, I think my old Lafayette Telstat might be wider, but not as high. That is one NICE looking radio you have there. Does it also have SSB? What are the four meters for? I have never seen more than two on a radio. But like I said, that is a nice looking radio! Keith in Atlanta |

Keith, its a Dak Mark IX, it was a 40 channel AM only, although it does have extra channels now. They made a Mark X that was AM/SSB. You can tell how high it is by that D-104. Its 19 inches wide, 9 1/2 inches high, and 13 inches deep. It makes my Galaxy Saturn look small, ha. Probably weighs 30 lbs. The meters are from left to right: 1.SWR 2.Power out/plate voltage 3.modulation 4.signal meter Looks impressive, huh, and it is pretty with all the meters lighted up. They were/are not that great a radio however. The receive is good, but really sensitive, therefore picks up bleedover pretty bad. When you get the 26 screws out of the top to look in, its kinda disappointing, there's a mobile radio board mounted inside, which is like most base radios, but you expect more with this big boy. Also has a good sized power supply, and its solid state with a couple tubes, one for modulation and a power tube. It does have good loud modulation with the tubes, but not the big swing of the dual final radios. Anyway, its a good conversation piece. BTW,I just made that pic today, I had been using it, and thought about this thread. scrapiron |

My Dad had a Realistic TRC-211 5 watt, 6 channel hand held that he used for the job. I bought the crystal for channel 19 ( 27.185 ) so I could listen to the truck drivers with it. It must have planted a seed because now I drive a truck for a living. |

My first radio was 3 ch. 300 mw walkie talkie from Radio Shack worked great but the plastic piece inside the radio that held the antenna in place kept breaking so every 2 months I would have to take it back and talk em into letting get a new one. After that my first real radio was a sears roadtalker 23 am mobile on a $10 whip antenna from service merchandise. I was in heaven!! |

International Executive 23 channel synthesized. It is a 2 piece unit to be used as a mobile. The larger of the 2 was designed to be mounted in the trunk. Both pieces have tubes and are connected by a multi conductor jumper. It will take 6vdc +/- ground, 12vdc +/- ground, 24vdc +/- ground, 120vac & 220vac. If you count both units and the jumper it would give Scrapirons DAK a challenge for the biggest. Yep, it is up in the closet still... |

A Midland 13-883c and a 13-830, back in mid 70s. Still have both and they still work. Both totally stock, AM only. I have a mag mount that I sometimes used when a second vehicle was travelling with me and had no radio. These days I use MURS mobiles for the same purpose. |
