I am interested in the Connex 4800 and the Omegaforce S45.I have done a search on both of these radios and have read every post. There has not been any recent post of the performance of the Connex radio. I would like to hear the opinions from someone that has had the Connex for a while, and from someone that has had experience with both of these radios. I like the bells and whistles of both of these radios, but what I'm looking for is TX/RX clarity and quality on AM & SSB. Basically, which one is the better radio? Which one would you choose, and why? Oh yea, the radio will be used for 11m.

Thanks,
GIJOE

I have had my Connex 4800 DXL for a long time now, and it has been a great radio for me. It has a nice sensitive recieve, and transmits well. It has taken a lot of abuse in my 4 x 4, and still works fine. It has a nice sideband too, easy to tune, and clear.

the only complaint that I have with my 4800 is that it is sensitive to heat... changes freq from cold to hot....BUT if you have it set on freq when it is warm in the vehicle then it will be off when you go in a cold vehickle , if you do not change freq it will go back to being on freq when vehickle warms up...not a big deal just a little deal, and if used as a base no deal at all...

Yeah, you are right about that, but so are a lot of other radios, I had a galaxy 99 that was just the same, didnt like the cold weather at all.

Glassbysam....

A sign of poor design in ANY RADIO and most noted in a ssb radio is drift. Now EVERY radio drifts but it is a matter of does it cause a problem if you have to retune IT IS DRIFTING TOO MUCH. Ham sets of note Swan 250 ( 6 meters ) AKA Swan 2 drifty .... need i say more... and the infamous REGENCY HR-440 NO JOKE if you put in in your car at 72f and let the car heat to 165F it would drift 30khz thats 3 cb ch so it was useless for repeater work Regency had no fix and it soon was gone from the market. Personly i like the mag-257 a HTX-10 clone the mag stands up to alot more expensive radios and the HTX-10 ham only version is still sough after as a small moble set. I ran a test on my Grant LT from a cold start to 6 hours of warmup less that 100 hz heck i can live with that. My choice mag-257 or simular set for cb/10 meter use Gratn LT for cb only.

I have a Connex 4800DXL and it does drift a bit. Uselly .004 to .005 high to normal (cold high). I use this on base for AM so no big deal. I have a Lincoln for SSB.
I also have a Mag 257 which is a good radio but a little unhandy to use. I like simplicity.

On really cold days my dx 959 mobile takes about 30-45 minutes to warm up so that the clarifier gives me +/- .001 range. When cold I usually can't get down to .384. Sometimes on really cold days I can get up to .387 when I first turn on. Once it warms up I get .384-.386 clarifier range and all is well. Once warm it is stable.
Has anybody looked into a warmer for their radios? Something like a crystal oven used on older military and high end ham rigs.

GIJoe,
I've had my 4800DXL for several years now and love it. Ya, it drifts in temperature changes, but most radios do. It doesn't drift enough to have to re-clarify each use. I feel it is a great AM radio. As for SSB I couldn't say, don't use it. Mine is the older one without echo, so I can't comment on that. I've set it up to dead key 2 watts and swing maximum (35 to 40 on my Dosy). Great for driving... The receive brings in a little too much static. I just lower the RF gain a touch. The Shotky diode mod is suppose to help with that I believe. I use an Astatic 575M6 mic that complements the radio very well (according to reports).

I have never used or heard the Omegaforce S45.

Viking,
I have the same setup as you do, I think that mic matches up great to the Connex. I use it a lot on SSB in the summer, as skip usually doesnt roll here in the summer. It is a fine SSB radio. I have been very pleased with the overall performance, one of the best radios I have ever had, and I have had many.

Pig040,
I wouldn't think you'd need a heater, at least not to the same degree that us higher lattitude folks have. But I too use that heater. Problem is, when it's that cold, it's usually pointing more at me than the radio.

I hear that Barracuda, but when your teeth stop chattering, then the radio is usually ready to go!!
