I am just curious guys. Anyone out there in the food service industry like I am? Whether you work on restaurant, B & I, college/university, etc, foodservice distributor, broker or manufacture. I think it is neat to hear what all everyone does. I know it shows up in some posts, but we don't always read the profiles of folks.

Well, Keith I used to haul for a food grade trucking company, LCL Bulk Transport out of Green Bay,WI. We hauld chocalate in tankers (ready to eat) from Hershy Choc. in Hershy,PA. From M&M mars choc. in Chicago to Elizabethtown,PA. just to name a few. It was great work but money was not good so I changed over to a local company (still tanker) but I don't think you would want to eat what I haul now. Phenol (DEADLY poisin) which by the way is in chloroseptic spray.Molton Maleic Anhydryde(Maleic Acid)(CORROSIVE SOLVENT) which also is in Sweet tarts, kool aid etc. Acetone,Toulene,Xylene,AMS (FLAMMABLE Solvents) Just to name a few. But anyways just thought I would add that I was in the food grade buisness for a while.

LOL , no but it is found in certain medication's I haul the Acetone,Toulene,Xylene,AMS,Hexene(ALL EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE) to alot of places that make medicine, mostly these items are used for cleaning products (INDUSTRIAL SOLVENTS) but they are in alot of products that everybody uses everyday. Acetone(fingernail polish remover)Toulene and Xylene,Hexene are products found in gasoline. But mostly and mainly used for a cleaning solvent, will cause the chemical resistant gloves I wear to get very sticky (melt) right in your hands when handling this stuff.
The Phenol (deadly poisin) I have to completely suit up for this product consist of complete rain suit a resperator chemical gloves and rubber boots. Acetone,Toulene,Xylene,Hexene we have to wear a nomax suit(flame retardent) coverall. AMS we wear nomax and a complete rain suite( both are flame retardent)Maleic Acid just resperator rain coat and chemical gloves.
Oh yea just to let you know PHENOL( remeber deadly poisin)Acetone is a waste bi product of Phenol and Acetone will not hurt you if you get it on you. But PHENOL will KILL you if you get enough of it on you. They say 1 tiny drop will BURN you severly. We also sometimes haul Resin(liquid form) which is main product in the making of fiberglass, we haul this mainly to boat manufactures and also I hauled a load to a bowling ball factory to. LOL it is funny sometimes at the places I have taken this stuff to. But it is an interesting job. Learn something new everyday.

Hornet,
Don't you wear a mask when handling toluene? That's the solvent used in some of the glues that folks used to sniff to get high.

I am a professional Chef, 21 years experience (started in restaurants bussing tables when I was 14, then started cooking at 16) I have a degree in Culinary Arts from Joliet Junior College, and right now I am working for a catering company that specializes in clients at the University of Ill. ( We're kindof like Sodexho/Marriott services)I have worked in Chicago, Estes Park Colorado, St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, and at Ranger's football stadium in Glasgow Scotland, among other places. I love going to work every day, but I love my free time even more, that's what I work for---time with family, and time to travel and see this amazing world.

No, Barracuda I don't wear a mask to load toluene. It is not required, but if I had to load it everyday and all day long I would wear it. But since it only takes about 15 mins. to load then I just keep my head in the clean air so as to not smell it, but just smelling it won't hurt you,(wiff) of it is all you get when loading it.
Ryan, no I don't think that was me LOL I have hauled it enough to know better. That is one thing I learned when I started hauling HAZMAT material...... better keep your head straight or you will end up with dirty side up on the hiway, me myself would rather keep the shiny side up all the time.

I spent years in the restaurant business years ago ending as a GM of my own store before I left and went into nursing.
