I got a bunch of FREE pioneer stereo stuff (CD player, tape deck, tuner, and a EQ) from my boss at work and everything works fine but the CD player needs cleaned it skips once in a great while. I think it might be my CDs (a few are scratched) but then again it might need a overall cleaning. What do i need to do to get it cleaned? is there a kit that you can get that will clean the CD reader?

This is in my area of expertise.

Some of my stations still use CD's on the air for everyday use. The machines require maintenence about once a month. Here is how I clean the optics:

Buy a small bottle of Kodak lens cleaner. Available at any camera shop.

Buy some large ended wood handle Q-tips. Also avaialable from the camera shop, or an electronics house. Do NOT buy the ones with the small amount of cotton on the ends, you want the ones with the larger bundle of cotton on the ends. You do not want the foam ones either.

Disassemble the CD player so that you have clear access to the lens.

Apply a drop or two of lens cleaner to one side of the Q-tip. Roll the wet side of the Q-tip on the lens. Roll for about 5 seconds, making sure to cover the entire lens surface. Do NOT push down! Immediately turn the Q-tip over and use the dry end to roll across the lens and dry it.

Reassemble the CD player and enjoy.

Occasionally (every 6 months or so) I like to also clean the mechanism and relube. The lube for CD players is a special oil that is not avaialable many places. I get it from Denon directly.

Optics seems to last 1-2 years of continuous use (24/7). In a home unit, optics will last a lot longer.
