Just got a quick one here to ask some opinions on galaxy radios vs. rci radio's. I know I could use the search button here and read up on all the info on this forum in the past but I was just curiouis what the difference was between like the 2980, 2517, 2527, 2985dx...and so fourth. I know the 2990 has the built in amp but just wondering what your thoughts were. I also seen the new 2547 that's a total different look for those galaxy radio's.

Boxcar look below, Galaxy vs rci, my self I favor the Galaxy 2517 all the way, more items, Talk back etc, the 2995 is ok but put an amp with the 2517 and it is much better, I think

IF I WOULD HAVE SOME SAY IN THIS. I HAD A GALAXY DX55V FOR A YEAR AND LOVED THAT RADIO BUT ONCE I GOT THE RCI 2950DX THAT WAS IT. THE RANGER IS SO MUCH BETTER. BUT YOU ALL THINK WELL THE GALAXY DID NOT HAVE USB or LSB THAT DOIES NOT MATTER EVEN IF THE RANGER DID NOT HAVE SIDE BAND IT STILL WOULD BE A BETTER RADIO. I LOVE GALAXY RADIOS BUT STILL RANGER HAS GOT MY VOTE. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE METER THEY HAVE TO WORK ON. THE IDIOT LIGHTS HAVE TO GO. ONLY IF IN THE NEAR FUTURE IF THEY WOULD COME OUT WITH ONE YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO PLUG IN THE BACK.

Foxracing send me your 2950 and I will test it, supposed to be a good radio, I only think they really over priced the 2995 it is really high in price, and with a small amp

I agree on the 2950. I have one myself and it's a talker. loud audio plus the channels in it are nice. I heard some 2990's warble a little on sideband though. I had a guy live by me that had a 2990 and his audio was very nice. Loud with just a touch of echo. He ran a desktop D104 with it. I'd have to say the 2980 has been catching my eye but both that and the 2517 are getting harder to find. I am curious what's the difference in these radio's though. They all look the same to me appearance wise.

I think they come from the same company. I believe I read where a Tech said they are basically the same radio. Maybe in the other topic identical to this topic.

KarateButcher, do you have much tvi running some shoes on the 2517? My 2517 talks and hears so good I rarely feel I need some heat.

Mikeforms, I run power maybe once in every three months and that is like for about 2 minutes, and yes I do have TVI in the house when I use it, I have two tvi filters in line for every day use.
And yes these radios have really good ears, I can hear a lot from my house but it helps living in a town where the elevation is 800 feet, and I sit on a hill about 75 feet up. my antenna is onlt 21 feet from the ground.

I installed the large meter on a Magnum Alpha Force with success, Hmm...sounds like I need to investigate a customization project...."monster radio garage".

I agree the 2995 is overpriced. Heck they done away with the echo and the price didnt even drop in fact went up over what the 2990 cost new!!!!!

HMMMMMMMMMMM

Could the difference in Price be because the 2990DX is a 10 Meter Radio and the 2995DX is a 10 & 12 Meter Radio?

More Radio = More Money

Correction. More Features = More Money. It costs manufactures only pennies on the dollar to add simple features to a radio to grab the attention of a buyer and make any easy $50 or more. I think in todays radio market, a Magnum 257 is all the radio a guy needs. It has the most honest price on todays market. I never understood how gadgets like roger beeps, echo, and all that other nonsence stuff ended up on 10 meter radios. When's the last time anyone heard 2 licensed operators use echo during a QSO on 10 meters? These new radios are tailored for the CB'er. If companies are making money marketing radios with all of these gadgets, more power to them. I like my radios simple and the 257 gets my highest vote for a bare bones radio!

A simple bare bones radio is boring to me. I liked the features my old 2990 had and yes i use echo sometimes on AM it sounds cool if its runned right. My 2995 is kinda dull in compariosn ot the 2990 IMHO... Good radio though for talking on SSB and AM but its boring without the echo! If i can find a good, clean, used 2990 that i like id probably sell the 2995 and get the 2990!
