My father in law has a cobra 142gtl and a klv550,in the recent past he always sounded clear tonight he sounded like he was talking under water, very distorted, nearly impossible to understand him.At the time he had clear skies and 5 below zero,I had heavy snow fall and 17 above,do you think it's just weather conditions or do you think his radio power supply is crapping out?Or possibly the voltage regulator? He said he had a very good copy on me,his recieve was unaffected,so I seriously doubt it is the voltage reg.Opinions please, thank you .Bigbob |

If possible next time try with amp off. If it clears, then go back amp on one stage at a time. |

Question : Is he or you using a beam ? If so, what you could have been listenig to is called " Back scatter". It would take to long for me to try and explain but it is not uncommon to hear this effect. When I live in Alaska, it was a , should I say, every winter event. You could go to a ARRL web site or QST and look up the imfo. It is very interesting how these signals work. |

Q: Was he on SSB? I had a radio like that one that did as you described. A: I had to back off the mic gain on the radio to clear it up. mikefromms |

He always runs the mike gain at 12:00 or half way. |
