I posted this under another thread and I thought I should post it again under a new thread in case no one saw it. I'd like to see everyone's feedback on this topic.

What is everyones defenition of "GOOD" when it comes to radios? Is it the fact that they have a lot of bells and whistles, a big meter, pretty flashing lights, chrome and or gold, lots of fancy advertising to lure the buyer in? I'm really curious. The Uniden Grant Lt is all the radio I really need. And it is the Best radio on todays CB market. It has plenty of punch, good audio tone quality, good receive, very durable, and a really fair price. The stock mic is pretty good at getting through pile ups. I use a Diesel 360-4 and have netted the best results with this mic. I've used the stock mic, d104-m6, astatic 575-m6, and a few other not so well heard of mics, and the Diesel takes the cake. The fact is I get better audio reports with this combination than I do with my Yaesu FT-757GX with the stock mic, and I've heard these before and they sound good. I know several other people who own the Lt's and LOVE them. Internally, they are pretty much the same radio they started out as way back when with the original Grants, unlike the Cobra 148 of today. I have found out many times over that the more does not equal the marrier in this world of radios. Sometimes fancy wrappers can hide a whole bunch of trouble on the inside. One of the best AM/SSB radios made was the Uniden PC-122XL. Of course good things never last and that radio was discontinued a few years ago. The thing that some people did to that radio to kill it's performance was put a power mic on them. With the modulation that radio had it was totally unecessary. This is just one example of a CB'er wanting to dominate the hobby by adding more things to improve the visual status and bragging rights of the radio station. I was once guilty of this. I guess that's what seems to matter most in this world we live in. I for one have found that the simple things usually work the best and for me the Uniden Grant Lt gets my vote for best CB on todays market!

A good radio would be one that is well made, tunes up well, and is reliable and sounds great on the air. So a good c.b. set would be the old Cobra 29's from the Phillipines or the Dynascan era. People don't like the newer soundcrapper series Cobra radio's cause they are cheaply made and just don't hold their own as well. You might even prefer an older 148 or Grant xl over what ya got now. take care.

amen to that stickshift. grants are indeed a well built solid performing radio in both am and sideband. in fact i would take my grant over that lousy 2950 that i just got rid of. as far as recievers go there is no comparo the grant pretty much blocks ajacent channels. the rci,,, get real
anything galaxy, rci, and the rest of the clones (including the voyage) are junk by my standards and ive used a few. THE UNIDEN GRANT IS A BETTER RADIO THAN ANY OF THESE... I REALLY OPENED A CAN OF WORMS.

A Good radio is a radio that is loud and proud with a STOCK MIKE.
A Good radio is stable and simple to use and says 148 or Grant on the front.

Jon666,

The Forummaster should have the Magnum S-3's in next week.

Also I should have the REVIEW on the Magnum S-3 finished soon.

When talking with Sam Lewis (Owner of RF Limited / Magnum Radio's) yesterday he said the Latest Shipment of the S-3's and Omega Force Radio's Arrived Tuesday.

The old Uniden PC76XL (made in Phillipines)were very popular and can be easily modified. Pretty much the same as the old Cobra 29s. (Uniden made the Cobras btw). You can get one on EBAY for 40 to 50 dollars depending on how the bidding goes.

the antenna system is what makes or breaks any radio.

A good radio really depends on how useful it is in a given application. The same goes for amplifiers, antennas, etc... All stops open, here are my favorite radios.

Yaesu Pro - The best FM radios out there.
Con - Not the most intuitive radio to operate.

Galaxy(any) Pro - Great radio for AM, ease to mod, lots of mods available Con - hard to operate on Sideband, Band switch makes it easy to get lost out of band.

Magnum257 Pro - Great all around all mode radio. Con - Almost no memory, VFO Stinks, Only 1 CTCSS(88.5)

Ranger2950DX Pro - Great radio for most applications. Con - No CTCSS

Ranger5054 Same as 2950DX

2510(Lincoln) Pro - Great Sideband radio, and ok CW radio, Great recieve, VFO!, Plenty of mods. Con - Buttons make the radio hard to setup while driving.

ICOM706 Overall I dislike this radio, but it works, and is easy to operate while driving. Otherwise, I would have gotten the YaesuFT857 which is a superior radio, but you have to preset everything before you use it.

I can go on and on, but you get the picture.

TWA77 I can agree with you 100% Any crappy radio will work with a great antenna or a big antenna. That however is another thread ;)

Guess we have a very large can of worms opened up.
I have had about every good sideband radio on the market since starting on AM in 1963 and then on to sideband operation with the serious operaters in 1976, over the years I've found the Cobra 139XLR to be a perfect radio, then of course after the FCC found out what could be done with the UPD858 PLL that was the end of the good radio era. although not near as good the Cobra 2000GTL came on the market along with it's mobile counterpart the 148GTL and the Uniden Grant XL have become the radios of choice. the newer line such as the Uniden Grant LT are not as good because the manufacturers are now using lesser componets than the GTL and XL series of radios, my personal collection sports a President Washington (UPD858PLL) and a Uniden Grant XL. I have seen the circuit board and clarifier circuit of the Uniden Grant LT and I didn't like what I saw when comparing the Grant LT with it's older brother the Grant XL, the new 148s and Grant LT line are not the same radio as the GTL and XL line.

Any of the older grants and Cobras pre 1995 or so are all great IMHO. ive had them all and the faves of mine has been the 142GTL,(which i have in my posession now) 2000 and the good ol standby the Cobra 148GTL and the Grant XL!!
For the other radios my faves for reliablity on AM and SSB have been the HR 2510, 2600, AR 3500/3300, galaxy 22B, 2527, RCI 2990, 2970, 2950, the new 2995 DX and the 2970 DX. The newer SMT radios are impossible to tinker on (which i like to do) but from what ive noticed the 2970 DX i have seems to hold up a lot better and seems to be more reliable in my mobile than any other ranger or Galaxy ive had.. My 2995 is a great base and i like it a lot but it doesnt have echo which i like to use every so often..
