How much gain will I get if I put a groundplane kit on my antron 99?In my F-150 I run a Wilson 2000 trucker.I can't get the swr below a 1.5 any suggestions on how I can get it lower?Would I get out better if I got a 102' whip or a Wilson fiberglass antenna? Thanks,

Snowman

Certainly nothing wrong with 1.5 swr on that antenna. You can usually get the Wilson 1000,2000,etc.magnet mount down to 1.2.Concerning the A99 ground plane, in my experience with dozens of A99s is the ground plane kit is just another way to get a few more dollars out of your pocket.

Snowman-LA,

Vern's right. The groundplane kit isn't worth it. And the magnet mount, will improve your SW. Slap a Wilson 1000 in the middle of the roof and you'll rock!

Snowman,

I, too, agree with Vernon and Steve, but I have recently had problems getting a new antenna I have tuned to the lowest SWR. The antenna is a large, "open coil" type much like the Workman open coil series. I had it mounted on a very powerful magnet mount using THREE 5 inch magnets(!). Problem was, I couldn't get the antenna tuned for SWR less than 2:1. I wasn't satisfied with this and I knew I should be able to get the SWR lower. As it turns out, there were problems with the way in which the coax was connected to the antenna and to ground. There wasn't a complete discontinuity or the SWR would have been off the scale, but the antenna just wasn't getting a good enough ground through the metal of my car. I installed a new length of decent coax and attached it to the antenna in a different manner, and I made sure that a very good ground was achieved, and voila, SWR down around 1.2:1 with a much better bandwidth, too.

Oh, another thing that I've been warned about when using amplifiers with magnet mount antennas. Depending on the final output power to the antenna, high enough wattage may cause the paint beneath the magnet(s) to blister. I have not seen this myself, but then again I have not been running more than 25 watts PEP thru this antenna so far. So...

Bottom line, check all connections and even with a magnet mount antenna, make sure you've got a really good ground connection.

Thanks to all who replied. I tried out the Wilson Silverload. I got the swr's to below a 1. Has anyone tried out the Eagle Tomahawk? Has anyone ever heard of a K1313 amp? I have one and it seems to do pretty good. It puts out 100-150 watts.

I used to run the K1313 but it destroyed my neighbors electronics. He said it came across everything but the kitchen sink.

Suppose your swr was 1.5 and you were running 100 watts of power.

foward power would be: 96watts

reflected power would be: 4watts

A 1.5 swr is about 95 or 96% efficient which means almost all of your power is being radiated by the antenna. so if you swr was 1.1 or 1.5, the guy on the other end wouldnt even noctice ANY difference. On my Hf antennas I always try to shoot for a 1.5 or better even though anything less than 2 to 1 is okay to work with.

MFJ can take care of your problem With the 99 I like the skirt, it seems to keep me in the U.K. and thats from Ca. The SWR situstion is easy to solve, it just takes some more money.

My geuss on the mobile problem is that it's a Ford, I had major problems with grounding on a 2000 F150 not exactly sure what fixed it but I am willing to work backwards to find out what fixed it. That is if your talking about a ford with the swr problems.

I forgot to add that if anyone wants to try qrp on 11 meter's post it and lets try to oganize it.
Qrp is fun if you like a challenge.
(did I mention ground the antenna)

Hey Hydro.

I do QRP on 11 meters 24/7! Listen on 27.125 (channel 14) for the part 15 beacon AOH. The morse is sent in MCW at 7 WPM using a tone freq. of 1750 Hz.

Oh, and my antenna is grounded.

Hamcber is that am or ssb?

I think I over did the ground your antenna thing but you would'nt believe (or maybe you would) how many problems I fixed for people by adding a ground.

Roof Paint Goes When you push power!! Its best to drill a hole and hard mount. You also get out better and less strange problems!!WATER BOY
