Shure makes a power mike but the quality of voice reproduction on their regular mikes is so good theres little need for it,in normal circuits 100% modulation is as good as it gets, but 100% modulation with a lousy mike sounds lousy, shure mikes are to astatic as a rolls royce is to a cadilac, but the cadilac is still being produced and the astatic is not, check out a shure you can't go wrong.

Astatic is not going out of business. However the tooling they had to manufacture the TUG type desk microphones was from the 1930's and started falling apart. They patched it for a number of years but finally could do it no longer.

Last word from them was they were going to import a new line of microphones.

That seems to be the route everyone is taking now days, importing. The economy is not good right now and I don't see how importing is going to help it. Cheaper is good for the seller and not so good for the customer. Quality will more than likely a much lower value. Bottom line is, they still dropped a GOOD mic, the 575-m6. The tooling for that is the same as the 636 and road devils. Good things never last. Buy what you can while you can.

The Shure 526T is a very good mic. I've heard many with 2510's/Licoln's/Emperor's. They give those radios the "PUNCH" of a high end HF rig. I highly recomend the Shure 526T! I wish I could find a hand mic that could match the audio quality of that mic.

A long time ago one of my friends ran one on his Cobra 142GTL and he said it was the best mike he EVER had even better than his D 104s.. So are they better than the Turner plus 2s and 3s and the famous astatic D 104? I see they are are on a certain Ham radio dealers (that place in Ohio) webpage but they are on order.... They are listed for 99.95. Can Copper get them and can they get them cheaper? If they are that good i want one!!!! LOL

To me "better" is questionable.

I believe in applications of a Licoln/2510/Emperor, Kenwood TS-440/TS-50, and Ranger 2950, the audio quality and punch is best with the the Shure 526T. The Turner Plus 2's and 3's are second. The D104's are third. This is mostly due to the the lack of the mic users understanding of how this mic actually works. These mics work great with boatanchors as well as newer radios when adjusted properly. Remember, every particular application differs!

In quality of construction:
1. D104, hands down (these things last forever
when not continuously wrenched on)
2. Turner Plus 2
3. Turner Plus 3
4. Shure 526T (cheaper plastic parts don't
match the quality of older metal ones)

In appearance
1. Once again, D104 (love the chrome)
2. Turner Plus 2 (something very unique)
3. Shure 526T (look particularly good with
newer rigs)
4. Turner Plus 3 (these mics are very
effective but have aways looked like
child's toys to me)

This is a very brief look at my opinions of these microphones. I could go on and on about mics all day. These are very narrow view's of all examples. Every particular apllication will vary depending on the radio, mic, and individual in particular. If a person has a high pitched voice, they tend to project high tones over most any radio/mic combination.

In closing, if I was to spend $100 for this mic, I think it would be a fair buy. I find this to be especially true when you compare it to a cheaply made $100 echo mic with a VU meter and all that other nonsence stuff. I myself am more found of hand mics. For now, the Astatic 575-M6 has resided here for 10 years. When that one gives up the battle I have another brand new one anctiously waiting to take it's place. After that we'll see.

Im looking into the 526T myself.. I own just about every other desk mike there is Turners and Astatic eagle mikes, and even a Robyn desk mike(one loud mammer jammer too!).. I never run handmikes on a base radio IMHO handmikes are for mobile radios NOT base stations. Nothing worse than have a really fancy, cool looking base station setup and complimenting it badly with a dorky looking mobile handmike.. Thats just me though...

I'm with you, Cm3885, I am a desk mic fanatic! I've got one (or two, lol) of just about everything except the Turners, because I HATE used equipment. If I could find a NOS Turner, I would buy it. My favorite mic is my Astatic Super Sidebander 10DAL (I have two, one in use and one NIB), but I really like the 526T too, but it is a little homely next to the Astatics. I'd still like to know if anyone has the "Expander 500" that Copper has, or one of the Workman desk mics, and if they are any good.
