Just purchased an Astron 20 Amp Power Supply and alot of reveiws I read people say they just flick the switch and thats it! How much electricity does it use while "on" but not being in use.. How many people here just leave their's on?

Thanks,

Rob

My supply runs 24/7, sits in the basement out-of-site with batteries hooked to it, and I have several #4ga fused leads running up through the floor to the radio room.

Out-of-site...Out-of-Mind, never have to worry about it!!!

ROB

I TRUST $3000 in radios to a astron 20 amp supply I agree it's a good supply. At the jail we use at least 50 of them NEVER had a failure one did fail after the room took a lighting hit and FRIED it. I have found mine runs COLD when not loaded so its not drawing much. My last one stayed on for more than 10 years and died when i took a lighting hit in 1999. The damage cooked a regulator board and since it was a 6 amp i bought this 20 to replace it.

Nothing works better or cleaner than a bank of deep cycle batteries, and a trickle charger. Better yet, a solar power cell and batteries.

Just clean DC power.

You dont say how long you run your power supply?Like I stated there both on 99% of the time unless the power goes out or if I change things aroud. That is very good time to own a power supply without a problem!

Take care everyone!Gage

it is really better to leave a power supply on than to turn it on and off everyday. power supplies have a huge inrush of current when they are 1st turned on. the 'thump' that you hear when you power the larger ones on is this inrush of current. it stresses the components.

not saying it will kill them to turn them on and off everyday. i do this at my shop, but it is better to just leave them on.

Gage,
Just having a little fun up there.
It's probably been on about 10 of those 18 years.
TripLite is still a pretty good product IMHO.

I got a pyramid 20 amp that I've had since 91 that stays on 24-7 it still works good too. I think even the cheapy's if not overloaded will last. I'll tell everyone pyramid is cheap, but I'll have to say I got a good one!

I must march to a different tune? I own a MFJ-4035 (35 amp) AND I turn it off and on daily. Sometimes two or three times a day. Course it's only been since 1999. Come to think of it, that must be why I keep blowing the backlight on the meter in the MFJ-969 tuner? I've replaced it twice.

I also have a Pyramid 46 in the garage station. It's not on much this time of year.

Hey, I got a Pyramid PS-21KX. And the only thing I don't like about it is I went through 2 On/Off switches in the last 6 years. That'll learn me for turnin' it on and off...LOL. After the last switch I replaced, it stays on with no problems. So far 1 1/2 years. (Knock on wood)

Pyramid Phase III PS-35,35 AMP., 37 AMP. surge. on 24/7, cool as can be even under 25 AMP. load. Got it used almost four years ago, have no idea how old it is, never a problem with it and it runs quiet. (knock on wood)

I had a pyramid gold, fancy looking with all the meters, and such, started buzzing like a bee if you used over 10 amps (35 amp supply). Dumped that sucker, got an astron 35, liked it so much I bought another one, never a problem again. Those astrons are really built.

I've got a case recently that's big enough for 3 40 amp transformers and 3 dozen pass transistors, and a little 317t voltage regulator, for a whopping 120 amps contiuous,I like homebrew, you need a little more power just add a heat sink and a bank of tophats, piece of cake.
