I have an RCI 2990 which I just recently bought.
I hooked up an external power meter to it. On regular AM Channels when I turn the variable power on the radio down to Zero I have a dead key of 80 watts and when I talk the meter swings up to 400 watts. Is this a problem? What are the fac tory specs for this radio. Could someone have turned the power up on the radio to do this or is there another problem? My SWR's are fine until I turn up the power. If I turn the power up to a 30
and recalibrate my SWR's they go up to a three?
Any advice yopu could give on this problem would be appreciated. Thanks

I would suggest a NEW METER.

Mine would dead key 30 watts with power set on 30 and swing around 190-200.

check the jumper between the radio and the meter. sounds like you have a bad jumper. what swr does the meter on the radio give you???

The SWR's are good on low power but when you increase the power they go up to two or three.
On regular AM cb band when I turn the power nob up to where the 100 is I get a dead key of 150 watts on the 1000 watt scale. Could someone have turned this radio up with their golden srewdriver to do this? maybe sopmthing is wrong with those
two big pills in the back? I took the meter to the shop they said it's not too bad shape but really loose on the 1000 watt scale.
PS. I don't have a Copper ID & password BUt I'd be glad to if you tell me how to do it.

ok, but you did not answer if this is with the swr meter built into the radio or not. i am trying to see if your external and internal meters are showing a high swr. you definitely have some type of problem because there is no 2990 that can swing to 400w. a problem like this usually comes from an external problem, like a bad cable or bad meter. usually it is a bad cable. it could also be that your antenna is not tuned correctly.

No this is not the meter built into the radio.
It is a power scanner pdc 700. The One built into the radio is not showing high SWR's only the external power scanner. However the SWR's are very good until I adjust the power knob on the radio. As I turn up the power on the radio then stop and recalibrate my SWR's then they go up sometimes two or three depending on how high I turn up the power. These readings also change depending on what band, set of frequenciesI am on whether above 40 or below one. I am using the 1000 wat scale. I took the meter to the shop last night and he said the meter is very loose on the 1000 watt scale. What does this mean?
THank you

"The One built into the radio is not showing high SWR's only the external power scanner."
-------------

i think you missed what i was saying but answered exactly what i needed to know anyway. i had asked earlier what the swr meter in the radio showed, and you never answered...my last post was trying to find what your radios swr meter read so we could compare the 2.

since the internal one is not showing a high swr, and only the external one is, logic would put the external meter in question.

did the shop you took the meter to check it to see if it was reading swr correctly for them?
