I have a KLV 550 amp on the bench which has new finals. They are SD1407's. The output on high is around 175 watts on AM with about 5 watts drive. What should this amp do at this level drive. I have no info on the normal output. It seems a little low to me but really can't find a reason why. |

I have one, with 4 watts it puts out 300 watts,it has sd1407 pills in it,it will do 600 on ssb,are they the same as the original finals, did you put them in or did a tech, are you a tech, the new finals need to be a matched pair and even if they are the same number their tuning must be checked and espescially if they are not, because different transistors need different matching circuits to work properly,y'know capacitance, inductance and resistance matching, ask Tech8541 or Tech671 in Ask the Tech section, they will give you the low-down.Bigbob |

I run my KLV 550 with 3 watts of drive and it puts out on AM 300 RMS and 350 to 400 PEP and on SSB it does 450 RMS and 500 to 550 RMS and that off my Dosy-4002. and it has the stock SD1407's in it |

This amp has the SD1407MP's just as it came with originaly. The amp was about 3 or 4 months old when it had a key-up problem. It was sent to a shop for service and they said it needed a new board because the old one had been hot. They wanted $180 to replace it and the owner said to forget it and return the amp. When it came back it had lost its original finals and had been fitted with MRF450's. We checked them and found they were dead along with a zener diode in the power supply. The shop had apparently switched finals and kept the good ones for themselves. We ordered a new set from RF Parts along with the zener and installed them. The amp keys and seems to talk good, it just seems a little weak on the meter. About 175 into a dummy load dead key is all it's doing. It will hit 300 SSB but thats it. It never had any signs of being hot. The board looks like new. This is the first KLV amp i have had any dealings with, but it seems to be built on the "lite side" . Loading an antenna, it shows about 200W on the wattmeter, but that still seems low. |

Jeez, nice shop! Unfortunately, that seems to be the rule rather than the exception with radio shops. |
