Tech8541, have you ran into many or any problems with doing that mod? Reason I'm asking is I just posted several comments on a 2980 and have not had many comments back. I have a radio that the swing is no more than 15 watts on the am side. You can turn the power up to like 8 watts and it will swing a little more that way but once you turn it down the swing goes down with it. I have noticed that npc mod was done to this radio also but I don't think that should have anything to do with this low swing on AM.

I know a lot of the techs on here dont like to post or even talk about any kind of NPC/RC/ PPC mods or any kind of mods at all that involve the modification of the TX curcuits or the AMC cuircuit in radios. Dunno why. Oh well. Some of us like to experiment with our radios. |

box, i just posted to that post. as far as the mods mentioned. they work, but you must use an oscope to set them properly. if your not using one, then you might as well just remove the limter or set the amc wideopen. the results will be similar. the big problem that i am seeing with these mods is that many times only a diode is used without a resistor. this pretty much removes the negative peaks of your modulation, but shows a -FALSE- increase in forward swing. so you have something that 'looks' good on a meter but is actually performing worse than a stock radio because the over all modulation is being cut in half.

Basically all it is, is putting 10 to 12 volts to the final to give more voltage, like ssb does except you have to watch the dead key or burn the final out. Also watch ALC voltage. |
