5{e so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but can a regular CB be set up to run VOX (voice activated transmitting)? Has anyone tried it? I thought perhaps a mic could be rigged electronically to key instead of by hand, in the car or while ones hands are full at home........rather than buying a $$$$ ham type rig with VOX built in? Thanks for the info! 73's....Lee

Sure can if you add an external VOX unit between your mic and the radio. Several places sell kits for them and I'd try Jameco. Of course that is after seeing if Copper has a kit for one..

Of course if all else fails let me know and I'll build one from scratch..

It is possible to add VOX to most any radio. There are kits available on net (somewhere, I forget who has them). With a little searching, schematics can probably be found also. I started one once. But that's about as far as it got.

You can buy an aftermaket vox that attaches to your radio where your mic goes, and the mc attaches to the box. Dont know how well they work, but they are out there. There was a discussion on this, try running vox on the forum search.

You might not like it, I never got used to it. I like a foot switch and a boom mic. No problem with background audio keying the mic and both hands are still free. Might be easier to rig up than Vox, good luck. sb106

Poppathree,

I drove big truck with a team operation for a long time and used the vox with a boom mic and earphone.
This eliminate noise while partner was trying to sleep as well as not having my hands tied up while manuvering in traffic.
The best part was not having the mic cord wrapped around the steering wheel while getting directions and manuvering around NYC or other large cities.

Take it a step further...there was and maybe still is a company making wireless vox microphone unit for the home/car. basically you wear a wireless mic and it transmitted your voice via infrared to the vox-box that keyed up and modulated the radio for you.

Cool idea!!! Im just don't remember who had the gadget...I sure Bruce on someone else will know.

Sounds like great ideas, guys. Ironmask&MR rf, let me know if you find any more info as to manufacturer, etc. I've seen headphone/boom mics for the motorolas and frs/gmrs, but that sounds like a nice idea for cb....I've posted my email, too. 73's..........Lee

VOX can be dangerous. I remember a story an old ham told me about a radio with VOX that was on in a couple's home. They began to fight and it went out over the air. The part that makes the tale more memorable is the couple was gay. You did not openly admit this in the 60's.

Normally, I would not ever post info like this with 'a friend told me that someone told him..'. The reason I am confident enough to bring this up is a few years ago, I was introduced to one half of the VOX duo and the tale was confirmed.
