I am looking for a top quality scanner for a friend. He wants all the best coverage and all the other stuff, but he needs the scanner to "talk" to tell freq and id of the station as he is blind .
Does anyone have any ideas?

I am not aware of any scanner that will do that BUT it shouldnt be too hard to add that capability to any scanner. Voice modules are out there and many have information for adding them to frequency readouts. Also I vaguely recall that a few years back an article for such an add-on was printed in either QST or 73 AR.

Some of he new Uniden Base Scanners allow you to set up the channels to emit a series of beeps when a carrier is received. Other than that I know of no other that will "talk to you".

Well, the Yaesu VR-5000 has an optional voice synthesiser that will announce the current operating frequency. That's ALOT of radio!

That's the only receiver I know of that can do that without having to modify it yourself, but Ozzie's sugestion sounds intriguing.

I do not know of any available product for this, but I would think that it may be possible to do with one of the "computer" recievers like the winRadio's or the similar icom unit. I do know that there is an ability to write plug-in code via simple basic language to both control and keep track of a winRadio. Given such programming ability, I'm sure it should be possible for someone to put such an ability together. Given the state of speech recognition software on PC's I would bet it would be possible to control such a unit via voice control as well. Sound's like a good spare-time project.
