I am setting up a base station for 11 meter, I was wondering what antenna to use. I hope to keep the total cost of radio, antenna, etc., to under $500. I will be putting the antenna in a hickory tree about 50' from my house, the tallest ladder I can borrow is a 24', thereby limiting the mount to about 20' above ground level. Total run of coax will be about 125'. I plan on keeping the base at 4 watts, but really want to get out. I am looking at either the Galaxy 2547 or Texas Ranger 696F-SSB. After all the trouble I went through with my mobile mount, I know the real key is getting a good antenna installation. Thanks for your help.

welcome to the forum Hibm.Either radio would be a good choice. As for antenna I would suggest either the Maco v5/8 or I-max 2000,depending on if you prefer metal or fiberglass.I would also suggest you reconsider using the hickory tree.use a telescopic pole instead. That with the radio and antenna choices above should still let you get on the air for just under 500.

well, for me a good antenna to put in a tree was an antron 99. i had one up in a jackpine when i lived at my parents years ago and it worked excellent. i paid someone a case of beer to climb the tree and we set the 10 foot of mast pipe the antenna was bolted to on a thick branch then used plumbers strap to hold the antenna to the tree about every 3 feet above that. the antenna would wave all over when the wind blowed but it got out good! ruffly 40 miles barefoot.. one other thing i do suggest is when you put it in the tree take the extra time and run a seperate ground line off the bottom of the mast pipe to a grounding rod cause this does seem to help the rx/tx no doubt about it.. good luck with yer tree

An Imax 2000 would slip right up through the limbs (minimum limb trimming) and would give you more height because is is 24 ft long. I just had a Thunder 8xb placed in a pinetree with the top about 71 ft and what a job! If it ever falls out or blow out (it will) I will go up with an Imax 2000.

Thanks for all of the ideas. I like the idea of the IMAX 2K and the telescope mast. I need to see the mast to see if I can do a "stealth" install, I don't think my wife will go for something that really stands out in the yard, maybe I can put the mast next to the tree and paint it! Any ideas where I could go (online) to see what that type of mast looks like?
This is one of those pay as you go installs and the way my money comes in it may be late summer before I can get on the airwaves, so don't be surprised to see a lot more questions in the future. Thanks again!

Well guys let me tell you about my tree, antenna. I had my A-99 leaning off of my deck on the rear of my home into the tree right next to the deck. A friend stoped by and ask if I was going to mount it on the roof. I explained that the Land Lord didn't want it on the home but a tower would be fine, being that it was mid Febuary I also explained it might be a few months till I got it up in the air. He is a tree trimmer by trade, headed to his truck and got his climbing gear, when he returned he climbed the tree and mounted it in the top near where the tree Y'd off in two directions. He then proceeded to mount the antenna to the tree (ready for this) useing a good quality roll of DUCT TAPE, the kind that is made with a cloth like fiber inside of it. Telling me it would hold till spring, then we'd move it when the weather was warm Well it is very hard to see at 40ft to the base of the A-99, but to my amazement it has been up in that same tree, for the past 4 years!!! I have kept a close watch on it with the scope on my varmint rifle. It seems like it is ageing but is still holding tight. Some of my friends make fun of it like that but ...what the heck it works and still does...LOL....I wouldn't recomend it for everyone. Ohhh and by the way, I have a back up antenna new in the box just in case....OHIOBIKER...aka TA-5275 Walter...
