I will be making settlement on a new house in May. It has a flat roof with no chimney. Would it be unwise to bolt a tripod on a 4 x 4 peice of plywood and put cinder blocks to hold it in place? Or should I risk a roof leak and bolt the tripod directly into the roof?

Intruder,
First, can you tell us what type of antenna and mast you would be mounting. The mount strength for a vertical may be very different than for a beam and rotor , for example. Second, before you mount a tripod on anything look to see if you have any plumbing vent stacks (there should be at least one). If the stack is sufficiently tall and made of cast iron, you may be able to mount to that instead, especially if you intent to just put up a vertical. If you do intend to mount a beam and rotor, I probably would suggest a tripod attached to the roof's structure, meaning bolt it into the rafters, not just the decking. Or, if you have access to the underside of the roof, bolt a matching set of plates on either side of the roof deck (inside and out) to help spread the load and provide a sturdy base.
Just some thought, hope this helps,
Barracuda

It's a Spectrum 1600 vertical on a 10' mast.
The vent pipe is only about 18" and I'll be using that for the Comet GP-15.

If you plan to guy it, your idea sounds fine.

Intruder,
For security and strength -check the roof first for weakness. Bolt the tripod directly THROUGH the roof to either existing beams or two 4 x 2 screwed and nailed to roof beams. To reduce problems ith water leakages cover both sides of any bolt with the same tar compound they use to seal a shingel roof. The tar will have to be touched up every couple of years but the roof and antenna will stay there longer than you probably will.

Thank you all for your input.
I will bolt the tripod directly into the roof.
I plan on being there for a long time.
