hello, everyone i'm new to the board.it's a great source of info.i sit for hours reading the post.i moved recently to wisconsin from n. carolina were i knew alot more people who talked on radios.i don't know many people here, especially radio people.i have been looking for a base radio.maybe a saturn turbo or rci 2990.i would even consider a galaxy 2517 or rci 2980.not having much luck finding anything around here.i talked to one radio shop and asked him about a galaxy or ranger base unit.he told me he don't see anything like those radios around here.he said that's something you would find more in the south.i looked on e-bay.the radios on there were either going for to much money or i didn't trust what i was seeing.i looked on copper's bargain page, everything that was working was already sold, when i called.anyway, if any of you guys know were i could get a good base radio,PLEASE HELP ME FIND ONE!!!!!

i hope this post don't sound to stupid!

Easyrider,

First off, WELCOME TO THE COPPER FORUM!

The Galaxy DX-2517 or the Ranger 2985 DX are both good radio's.

Another one that you might want to look at is the Ranger 2995DX.

It has more Features than the Turbo's or 2990's have and has the Built in AMP like the Turbo's & 2990 had.

Check out the link's below.

Thanks for the responce Lon and Joseph.Does the 2985DX have talk back or echo? How much more coverage does the 12 meter give you?Why do they say the 2985DX is the new power model? It seems like Galaxy quit making a high output/watt radio.

Lon,How do you become a CEF member?

Hey Joseph,I was a deputy in North carolina.

Thanks Guys!

Easyrider,

The 2985DX NEW POWER Version is 25 Watts.

Ranger said they had a lot of request's for a LOW POWER VERSION of the 2980.

The 2985 DX has NO Talkback & NO Echo from Factory.

It was designed as a Ham Radio with Ham Feature's.

So if you figure the radio and the price of a good amp to go with it, you are better off getting the 2995DX.

My 2995DX cover's 24.0000 to 31.9999

Hope this help's.

The RCI 2990/Saturn turbo is very hard to get around here anymore because people that have them hold onto them like a first born baby! Good clean used and non hacked units are even harder to find and if you find one, get the ol' wallet out! Guys that want big radios like the 90/turbo will pay big $$$ to get one used just so they dont have to get a new SMT board RCI DX series radio. People here avoid the SMT rangers like the flu! Cant sell them used here were I live and expect to get much out of one either. You are lucky if you can get $100.00 out of a decent used and clean RCI 2950DX and thats no joke! I personally saw 3 RCI 2950DX radios once at a CB shop on the used shelf that were traded in on OLDER RCI 2950s simply because no one wants the DX rangers. The 3 radios were selling for far less $$$ used than the older RCI 2950s. Also, not one person around here that is a tech or a CB shop owner can work on the SMT radios or has the proper equipment or know how to work on the SMT boards. Tney end up shipping them to Ranger and playing the waiting game and having the radio sent back deconverted and retuned to stock spects and then the guy has to reconvert the unit and so on and more $$ spent. So the older RCI 2950s,70s, 2990s and saturn Turbos get -BIG BUCKS- here were I live! A guy that i know sold a 1998 era 2970 for 350.00 USED mind ya!! Ol' boy made out like a bandit!!!!!! Now im not in no way posting to steer people away from the newer ranger RCI radios (I do like my 2970DX though! Its held up better than ANY other radio ive had in my mobile)) but this is whats going on here were I live with them........

Hi.
The Saturn turbo is still available under a different name.
It is the General Stonewall Jackson.
General makes the jackson from old turbo parts.
Easy mod, lots of power, echo, talkback, etc.
I have owned both & they are the same.
I just putchased my stonewall 2 weeks ago brand new.
good luck,
audioman

The Stonewall Jackson is NOT just like a Saturn Turbo! They look nothing alike. General does not manufacture them, RCI does.

I own them both. Who cares who makes them. They look the same, they perform the same, they sound the same on TX & RX & they are the exact same weight. I ask you, who cares who makes what. They are the same in & out. Exactly. They are both using the exact same boards, sub boards, etc.
Hope this clears this up.
I have both of them open just so I could be well informed before I type this.
They are the same.

If you think they look the same, then you must be blind. The Stonewall Jackson looks like a Galaxy Dx2517, while the Saturn Turbo looks like a Galaxy Dx2527, or a 2950 shoved into a rack mount box.

YOU might not care who makes them, but plenty of people on this forum care about the dissemination of ACCURATE information, which your post did not do on two different points.

Maybe this will help.

The Stonewall Jackson has:

The EXACT same Front Face Plate as the Texas Ranger TR696F SSB Base with One Exception.

It ONLY has a 5 digit Frequency display.

10 Small knobs and 1 Lage Channel knob with 5 toggle switches.

NO ~ NB/ANL, DIM, R BEEP, SWR, SPILT, SCAN, PRG, MEM, MAN, ENT, SHF, LOCK , UP, DN, BUTTON'S like the Galaxy Saturn Turbo, RCI 2990 and Ranger 2995DX has.

And NO 14 Button control panel & NO / 6 digit frequency display, like the Galaxy or RCI/Ranger Radio's have.

The Galaxy Saturn Turbo & RCI-2990 has:

11 Small Knobs & 1 Large Channel knob
NO TOGGLE SWITCHES.
14 button display / control panel & 6 Digit Frequency Display.

And the Galaxy Saturn Turbo, RCI2990 and Ranger 2995DX Radio's DO HAVE! the 14 Button control panel with, NB/ANL, DIM, R BEEP, SWR, SPILT, SCAN, PRG, MEM, MAN, ENT, SHF, LOCK , UP, DN, BUTTON'S

There is a Big Difference in Appearence and Feature's that the Galaxy and the RCI and Ranger Radio's have, that the Stonewall Jackson does not have.

Hope this clears some things up.
