would an RG58 cable be the right cable to run about 200'(+=)for a scanner from tower to house underground in a conduit? |

200ft??? I'd go with a lowerloss cable as well as try to get the antenna closer. Remember cable loss goes up as frequency goes up. Try using RG6 or if you can scrounge some some ex-cable tv hardline. Lest see at 150MHz RG-58 has around 5db loss per 100ft. So 200ft means 10db loss or 1/10 of the received signal making it as far as your scanner. Belden 9913 has around 1.5db per 100ft (at 200ft half your signal is lost), and 1/2 inch hardline has around 1.3db loss per hundred feet. If you had 7/8" hardline it has only 0.4db per 100ft loss but is pretty costly. |

initially 200 feet sounded like a lot, but then i thought, my scanner on the second floor is hooked to tv coax that runs through the wall, across the roof down the side of the house, over to tower about 40 feet away, and up to antenna at top of 6 sections of tower. the scanner in the kitchen runs to the basement, across the length of the house out the wall up the side of the house meets up with 2nd story coax and on to tower. not 200' but still a good run. maybe i'm missing some stuff, but i'm content with what i do hear. aj |
