O.K. I,m about to give up and try SSB. Can any of you give me a lsit of the benefits of SSB over regular AM DX? Any cons? Also if anyone knows of a good tech in the south central WI area, I need to expand my options. Thanks in advance. Rolling Rock 095 |

SSB goes farther, becuase many radios are set at a higher wattage for SSB. Also, because SSB has nom modulation, many antennas can handle more wattage on SSB than AM. Plus, you can get one the Sunday CEF nets 73's Rattlesnakejake |

Rollingrock 1st am power is 4 watts out, and ssb is 12 watts out. 2nd most of dx is on ssb, 3rd the serious dx guys and girls are on ssb and are very professional and polite. We have a net every Sunday on 27.115 LSB Its called copper fourm net or (CEF). We even have members from New Zealand and Australia which i have made contact also.Rollingrock SSB is the best way to go.As far as cons go none really, SSB radios cost a little more, But COPPERS has the best deals you will find on radios and equiptment. Also welcome to the Fourm. Your new freind Lowpowerhal CEF 136 |

SSB is great but for the first timers the clarifier deal pretty much sorts out the guys that are serious SSB users and those that are not.. |

When you buy a radio from COPPER, you have to click on the extra box for the tuning and peaking you are talking about (adds about $30). That includes opening a 10 meter radio to include 11 meters. The question on the clarifier: On "most" radios the clarifier acts as a frequency adjustment knob. It changes and adjusts the transmitting and receiving frequency slightly. |

Copper, OK, I may be a slow learner, but I finally get it. You (understandably) don't want questions regarding competent techs answered, unless the answer is "send it to Copper". Hey, it's your forum, and it's a good one! I'll stop sending in answers to these sorts of questions! Very Best Regards, Bob

Rolling My experience with an "unlocked" clarifier was a trainwreck. When you unlock the clarifier your now tuning to someones voice whom you dont know so you may be wrong bringing you off frequency. Then the next guy gets on the air and hey he is off frequency so I will tune to him. Dang now the guy I just tuned before is off freq,,,,,,all these guy have junky radios!! Look at your radio, your chasing people all over the frequency and they are chasing you and noone is on freq anymore. The clarifier when "Locked" adjusts your recieve only and not the transmit. less chasing around = more radio fun thats my short on it hope that helps (in other words, I would not unlock the clarifier) |

Chillydog, In the past we have had many dealers and techs want to advertise here. Since we are not in the business to help our competitors advertise we haven't allowed it. Rollingrock has an email address on his profile and anyone with information on a tech in his area can email him. This gets Rollingrock his information and helps us avoid advertising other dealers and techs. Thanks for your understanding. |

Rolling Rock make the jump to SSB, you'll not regret it. Less noise, more range ect. Don't be afraid of the clarifer, you'll get the hang of it quickly. I agree with "558" keep the clarifier locked. I put a radio in my wife's truck with an open clarifer and she refused to use it, too much trouble she said. I quickly got her another radio with the clarifier locked and she is a happy sidebander. Copper's has some great deals on SSB radios. For your first one you might want one without too many bells & whistles. 73's |
