OK, This will probably hogg the forum but I'm thinking of retiring my old Tram D62 on the shack's shelf for something a little newer. She's ran non-stop for years without fail but I think it's time to smell up the shack with a new radio (I just love the smell of a new radio out of the box). Help me out, Santa's shopping for the best "CB" around. I don't care for talkback, roger beeps, extra channels, or gobbs of power. I just want a genuine Single Side Band CB radio (no ham stuff) with a supurb receiver and clean sounding transmitter. Base or mobile style, don't matter. Am I dreaming? What's good? What's not so good?

I guess the answer would be the Texas Ranger 966 or a Uniden Grant XL given the limitations you stated.
There's other radios with better rx, but would include some of the things you said you don't want.

Warlock,
I'm really after keeping the shack legal. As long as the radio is SSB and a real 11 meter radio, really great receiver performance is very important. What other suggestions might you have?

Thanks,
MrRF

MrRF:Some years ago I wanted the bare basics (ie.)no extra channels,no roger beep,no echo,no freq. counter and the like. Then about six months after I bought a President Washington I payed to have extra channels put in and later on I had to have a freq. counter, more money.I learned to buy a radio with everything on it to start with and not to use the features I don't need unless six months down the road I have a change of heart.73's

For a legal, type accepted CB, you can't go wrong with the Uniden Washington.

I realize you wanted brand new but in my humble opinion some of the older stuff will smoke this
newer crap in both sound quality and longevity.
You obviously already know this because you ran that Tram for so many years.Every once in a while I see some SBE radios being sold on Ebay brand new.I know its a rare find but most definitely worth a look.If you can find a new or close to new SBE Super Sidebander grab it.I saw one still in the plastic go for Fifty bucks once!!!!Although not my favorite, the SBE radios are excellent on sideband and crystal clear on TX.
