I need a new mobile antenna I was going to get a
wilson 1000 trunk mount. However, someone told me the 1000 wasn't that great and if I was going to get a wilson I should get the 5000, or else go with a monkey made antenna. With the wilson trunk mount is there any special way it has to be grounded or when it clamps to the trunk would that be enough ground? I thought about a mag mount but don't want to damage the paint on the car. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

When you say rag what kind of rag? Like a red shop rag that you would get from an auto parts store? Also I'm using a barefoot stock radio I need all the help I can get would you go with the wilson 1000 or 5000. I was told the 5000 was much better and I should get it instead.
Thanks for the info

Get the Wilson 1000 and depending on what type of Vehicle you are mounting it on, you may have to run a ground wire from the Trunk Mount to the frame for a good ground.

The Wilson 1000 will perform the same or much better than the monkey made antennas.

And I own both but use the Wilson 1000's exclusively on everything and the Monkey mades sit on the shelf.

My personal thoughts on the Wilson 1000 antennas is they are the BEST PERFORMING ANTENNA on the market.

And in selling maybe 2000 of them over the years I have really only seen less than 1% that actually needed the Wilson 5000 for anything more than because it is Bigger and Looks Better to them.

You just can't go wrong with the Wilson 1000.

Wendy,

When Gator mentioned the Rag he was referring to when we took our 96 Impala SS and drove over to the CEF Gathering in Walcott IA.

The 1st Sargant wanted me to put a wash cloth under the Mag Mount on the roof to prevent any chance of anything happining to the paint.

We have a little over $80.000 tied up in it and 6000 miles on it and that was the first time it has been driven on the Open Road in over 6 years.

We generally trailer it to the SUPER CHEVY Shows and other Car Shows.

Needless to say I did get chewed out in front of Alagator, Runaway, Redman, Redlady, Homeboy and Corncob when I threw the Wash Cloth inside instead of putting it under the Mag Mount.

NO DAMAGE TO PAINT after returning and she checked VERY CLOSE!

As I said in my above post we use the Wilson 1000's on all of our trucks and cars and have never had Paint Damage or any other kind of damage or problem with them.

Go with the Wilson 1000 as there is no need with your equipment to get the 5000.

Somebody told me pantyhose were great to help protect the paint and do not affect the ground. Thanks everybody! I'm going out to get the 1000 today. Happy DXing to all and to all a good day!!!

Hey Wendy, I second Lon's advice to you. I run a Wilson 500 and a Wilson 1000. Both are magnetic mount. NO problem with paint. I use them currently on my 03 Chevy Impala, and 2004 Chevy Silverado Z 71. I have NO desire to have my paint ruined. If you are still concerned, you can put a small napkin under it, or a very THIN piece of cloth. A small handkerchief would be fine. I have done this before, no change in swr's or performance that I could tell. Lon, please correct me if I am wrong, but the only reason she would need the Wilson 5000 would be if she was running a ton of power from an amplifier. Right? Let us know how you come out. I don't know which radio you ended up going with, but remember this: people will go spend a ton of money for a radio, then scrimp on the antenna, then wonder why they have poor performance. Relate that to someone who would go out and buy a BIG 53 " SCREEN TV, then they go buy a small set of RABBIT EARS and wonder why they don't have a good picture to watch. Hey Lon and KB, how is that for a comparison when it comes to an antenna? Can I get at least one raise for that? Can you make it two pallets high?

Hi Guys,
I got a cobra 19 ltd II classic for now. Mostly because of limited space and I could set it in a little coin holder thing without making any holes in the dash. I don't have a cig lighter, but I had an accessory power switch which I got the power from. If I decide in the future to upgrade my wats will it still be okay to run it this way or should I go directly to the fuse box? It seems to be working good. I decided on a wilson 1000 mag mount. There was little question about the wilson part. I've had my 500 many years it gave me good service. As it was so old and the cable and things were worn so I got a new one. I just wasn't sure if I wanted the mag or trunk mount. You have to be careful around here not too many people know what they are doing with cb stuff. So I decided to get a new one rather than replace the cable. You have to drive 50 to 100 miles to find a decent tech to work on your equiptment. You have to take it there then go back and pick it up later. Sometimes it's just better to buy something new.
Thank you for all your advice.

Last night while driving I made contact with someone 20 miles from me. He told me something wasn't right. After asking me questions and trying different things he finally asked me where my antenna was. I told him it was on the trunk. He told me to move it off of the trunk and onto the top. I did and he said it sounded like a different radio. 5 minutes later I was making a dx contact in North Carolina. I don't think I'll mess with it anymore.

Good morning Wendy. Deopending on the car, some cars do not use very much real metal in their trunk lids anymore. My mistake. I guess we should have checked to see which car you are driving. However, remember that by being on top of your car in the center, you have best set up to begin with. Plus, the top of your car is still all metal. I think, uh, I hope. I have said it for many years, if the car companies could use carboard on the top, they would!

Hey Lon,

I got a '96 Impala SS also. Mine is DCM (Dark Cherry Metallic). I use mine as a daily driver in the summer, and have a trunk lip mount with a Larsen NMO27B antenna. Doesn't scratch the paint.

As for the Wilson 1000 magmounts, those will scratch up your paint over time. I have one on my Suburban and it is leaving a mark up on the roof, from dirt that gets under the magnet. It can be cleaned up with some compound, etc, but the magmounts will leave their marks.

VERY NICE LOOKING SS

We ordered our 1996 BBB Chevrolet Impala SS and was lucky enough to go to Arlington, TX Assembly Plant and see it being born/made and roll of the Assembly Line into our waiting arms. .

It was born on September 13, 1996 at 7:29AM

Order #245BSE

Auto Sequence #107238

#32,072 of #41,934 that were made.

We are also very Lucky to have Jon Moss (Who Designed the SS for GM) and Pinky Randell who ordered the fisrt SS 2 years before they were made as good friends.

We also started the LLISSOA (Land of Lincoln Impala Super Sport Owners Association) here in Central Illinois.

Our License Plate is: LOLSS1

If you ever need anything just drop me a note.

We have about three pages of Mods on ours and under 7000 miles.

First I'm driving a 2003 dodge neon. The Person who helped me install the radio said I made a mistake putting the antenna on the top of my car. He says it looks bad and my antenna doesn't need a ground. We got the power source to my radio from a cigarette lighter looking power plug in the dash. He says I'm grounded from that plug and the antenna itself does not need a ground. What do you all think of this? The more ground and the higher the anntena the better right?

Wendy, your are correct.have the radio wired in properly.if you wire it hot when the key is off then the radio will be on the same channel it was when you turn it off.even if you forget to turn it off it wont run the battery down over night.I've also noticed that lighter plugs also introduce more static into the radio.and yes,for the antenna higher is better.myself I use a magmount k-40 on top.before summer is over I plan to replace it with a 108" steel whip mounted on the rear quarter.around here if you park in a mall parkinglot with a wilson 1000 or k-40 it will dissapere before you get done shopping!
