Darkhorse, Dead Key = The power your radio puts out when you key the Mic and say Nothing. Swing Wattage = The amount of Power your radio puts out when you key the Mic and say: AUDIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Example say your Radio Dead Keys 4 Watts with no Voice. This is called DEAD KEY WATTAGE. Then when you say AUDIOOOOOOOOO it will Swing to 8 Watts or more. This is SWING WATTAGE. Hope this helps. Lon Tech808 |

The TOP GUN Modulator Circuit, is a MAGNUM radio exclusive. Activating the modulator allows the radio operator to set the AM Power output level to as little as 1 watt carrier and still modulate (Swing)to 50 watts - without adding distoration. Note! (This is on the MAGNUM S-3 Model) The Power varies with the different MAGNUM Radios. Hope this helps. Lon Tech808 |

Thanks tech808, I need to learn more about all this; do you (or anyone) have any web addresses for sites that a newbie radio guy can go to learn some of this stuff? Ok, next questions: whats it mean when someone says they talked such and such range barefoot? What is "skipping"? |

Darkhorse SKIP is NOT the same as DUCTING. Ducting is a tempture inversion which BENDS radio signals back down. DUCTING gets BETTER with frequency. SKIP is "E" OR "F" layer clouds and becomes LESS with frequency. Geekster is right a silent key is a decesed HAM. |
