Ok, I set up my radio system, and now I am getting a different radio..........lol!! Just like a woman, can never decide on anything!! Here's where I need the suggestions:

I have a 1999 Olds Delta 88 (yes a granny car for a hot chick like me....lol). The problem is I have a console shifter. So, my console goes all the way to the front, I have know where to shove the radio under my stereo. Right now, I have my little Uniden between the passenger seat and the console. Any ideas?? Here's what I am getting, a Cobra 148 GTL older version. We thought about mounting it under the dash on the passenger side, but I would have to pull over every time I would want to change the channel, etc. Catch my drift?? :-) And, if we drill into the console, I would probably have problems selling it in the future. I am trying to avoid this, but knowing that we might have to do this, I am looking for any ideas from all of you out there!

On a side note! I just want to say, thanks for the great warm welcome here, and I am learning quite a bit, being new to all of this. Reading here and the knowledge that CM3885 has, I should do pretty good!! Thanks everybody!!

Kat

DO NOT USE Velcro to mount anything that weighs more thna a few ounces. Picture the problem - an emergency stop and the velcro can let go. Heck I've tried velrco just to mount an mic with and it did not work. The sun heats the glue, which softens and then the velcro release it's hold to what ever you stuck it too.

Drill holes in the console and if/when you sell the car buy a replacement console from the wreckers. Yes a more expensive method but hundred percent safer.

Look for a 'gimbled' mount. COPPER may sell them? They are a several jointed post that turns and twists several different directions, and screws to the floor (thru the carpet) and also screws to the radio. They're about $15 for a small one (6 inches long).

Honestly, a few cleanly drilled holes in the dashboard shouldn't affect the resale much if at all. More thah likely, you're going to get as little as possible for it anyway. If you trade it in, the dealer is going to recoupe anything you get for it in the purchase price of the new vehicle. If you sell it to a private party, they're obviously looking for the cheapest way to by a car and thaats is why they're buying from you, not a used car dealership. Take your time installing it drill all holes cleanly with a nice sharp bit and enjoy YOUR radio in YOUR car. I had the same dillema with my truck when I wanted to install a NMO mount for my dual band radio. Then I figured out that I need to do what I want to enjoy my hobby, and not worry about the few dollars difference it MIGHT make at resale. A large portion of trade-ins go straight to the dealer auctions and get sent to Mexico where they finish out their life. SO it really doesn't matter. By the way, if you get good INDUSTRIAL velcro and clean the surfaces you are going to put it on with rubbing alcohol, it should hold a large item very securely. I have had trouble getting it off, but if you mash the breaks at 80mph, that radio is still going to try to be going that fast right on out thruogh your windshield over the hood and onto the tarmac. Good luck

Moonshadow,
I had a cobra 148 gtl mounted to the side of the console. I didn't do it for a long while.
I was worried like you. I just recently traded my car in on another. Got 4000 for my car. It didn't affect my resale value at all. In fact I left the mounting bracket in the car when I got shed of it. It was easier to buy a new one than
to unscrew that one.

Yeah, even I know better than to use velcro, I mean if my dad ever fixed his farm equipment with velcro, he wouldn't be where he is today. So my mom and dad taught me right!

Anywhoooo, I have thought and thought and thought, and I agree with Wendy and Triplecguy, I'll just mount it, and maybe like Wendy, just leave the bracket if and when I ever trade my car in. Just wondering Wendy, what did the car dealer say when you traded it in?

Buyers beware, most times you don't really get anything for you old car when you trade it in. I have a very close friend who is a licensed used car dealer and he was the person who told me about this and new car dealers. New car dealers have a big margin figured in so you think your getting a trade in allowance. you are better off selling a used car privately and not trading in.
