I was going to put my tower up but just had an idea, I`t is the old tv antenna tower that people used years ago before cable tv.

Now it is 47 ft and I really dont want to guy it so what if I take metal rod and put it in the spaces going up the tower and weld it in on angles.

That would make triangles in all the spaces in the tower, This I would think would strengthen it cosiderably and the It would be ok if bracketed at 14ft.

What does everyone think? Good idea or not?

Thanks, Roger

Roger,I dont think I would go to that trouble. If you put the first 3 feet in concrete and braced at 14feet the maco wouldnt be too much wind load for that setup.adding the diagnals would be adding more weight to handle when erecting it plus increasing the windload of the tower itself.

My 50ft tower was originally a tv setup. I don't use any guy-wires on it. I built a hinge assembly with a steel plate across the bottom section of the tower with a large 1 inch pin welded across the plate. The pin goes through half-inch thick steel plates anchored in cement and set about two feet or so in the ground. The third leg of the tower is free to be bolted to the third anchor plat also cemented . All i have to do is loosen and remove two bolts and lower the tower and antenna to the ground for service . It has been up with my Antron on top for over five years with no problem. Those things need a paint job every now and then!

yes it would stiffen it up,(like rohn 25G) but like Dindin said at 47ft and braced at 14ft i dont think it really needs it.

Airplane, what are you wanting to put on it? There was a mention of a Maco but I didn't see that in the post from you. Like the others have said it will strengthen the tower, more so for the twisting action you would get from something like a beam. I have a 40ft American Steel type that has 3 bags of quick crete at the footing and is anchored at about 15 feet to my garage. I only have a IMAX 2000 and a small 5 element Cushcraft 2m/440 antenna on it. Had no problems at all, but I'd never climb past the anchor point. If you plan on putting it up and maybe making changes in the future (as in climbling it rather than hinge it back down) then I would certain guy it. Good luck and 73--

I am putting a maco v 5/8 on it, In time I will repace it with a maco 103 beam.

I would like to hinge it but not sure how to do it.

and I dont climb anything any more, to scared at my old age of 43years.

I know what you mean Airplane by not wanting to climb anymore. I'm 56 now and limit myself to hights of about only 60ft. LOL. Anything beyond that makes me nervous.

I find it amazing that the older we get, the bigger sissys we become. And you young guys can laugh all you want...your day is coming too.

The tower is made of all tube even the parts that are horizontal and are about 22 inches apart.

it is galvanized but not rusted except the top 8ft.

I dont know the brand just know its from the 60s.
