First I would like to introduce myself. My name is Clay, I am 26 years old and live in southern middle TN. Now with that said I will get to the good stuff. I have been around radios pretty much all of my life. My father was a ham operator, call sigh WD4OJU. He ran his station up untill about 89. Don't know why he stoped talking on the air. He had and used all of his stuff while I was too litte to understand what is was or was for. Now I do understand what it is for and am gaing and interest in it. Sadly he passed away last year and my inerest has only came on in the last few months. I now have all of his old equempment. Now this is where I get lost. I've got stuff I have no clue what is. I know I have got two HP ocillicopes(sp?), a 6 meter base station, a KDK 2516 2 meter mobile, one or two signal generators witch I have no Idea what these are or do and six or eight more pieces that I don't know what they are or there names. All of this stuff is at my mothers house right know and if any of you who read this would like to know or would be willing to educate me on some of this stuff I can and will get what info on it I can. Now then, as for me, I as is said earlyer I have just gotten into radio. As of now I have a Superstar 122 mobile with a K40 ant. in the truck. I do have a radio on the way for a base. I am going to run a Magnum 257 in the house for now. Just for honesty sake I will admit that none of my person equipment has come from Coppers. I promise I have a good reason for this. I bought or orderd all of my stuff before I found Copper's or this forum. With all of this said I have some questions for all of the vastly more knowledgeable here on the forum. I am inerested in getting my Ham ticket but I do not know how all of this works. Do I have get the Technician ticket first or can I go straight to the General class ticket. I have a real inerest in talking on the 10 meter side of things. I have found several places on the web to help me study for all three classes of exams but don't really know if they will work. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Oh yeah I almost forgot I also have a bunch of tubes, all different numbers and I do not know witch ones are for radios or tvs. My father in his day(we're talking late 70's early 80's) could work on or build anything electronic, I even found a freq counter he made. I can't seem to make it work though. Befor I go I will say this, all of the stuff I have fo my late fathers is old and has been in storage for several years so it my be worthless or nonfunctional. Thank you all for you time and reading my firs post. CBWII (crawdad) Excope on the forum. |

Welcome aboard Excope!! For the tests go to QRZ.com and take the tests there, they are made from the same question pool as the ham tests are made of, take the test there every day or so for a few weeks, and you will pass with flying colors! As far as general though, you will have to do the code thing, and there are a lot of study systems on the net for that, you just have to chose the one best for you. Good Luck!! Rich |

Excope, Below is the Link for the QRZ Ham Testing Site. http://www.qrz.com/testing.html Copy and past it to your favorites and as Rich stated the question and answers are 100% EXACT letter for letter as they will appear on your Ham Test. You WILL have to take your Technician Test & pass first before you take the General Test and as it stands right now you will also have to take the 5 WPM Code test & pass it to become a General Class Operator. GOOD LUCK. PS: Check out our CEF Radio Club and come join us on Sundays for a GREAT time! Lon Tech808 N9OSN

Excope Welcome to the COPPER Forum. I would suggest you find a Ham radio club in your town/area and ask them if they have anyone who would take a look at your Father's estate items. But I would also suggest you don't do that, but instead wait awhile until you yourself get an idea what items you may wish to keep. Again, welcome to the Forum. |

Ok, I'm debating it, but I think I MIGHT take my tech test next month at Superfest. I still haven't made up my mind yet..... If I can talk CM3885 into doing it with me.... |

Moonshadow, It will remain in effect until the day you depart this world as long as you keep re-newing it (every 10 years) or until you upgrade to a higher class. Lon Tech808 |
