My boss started a new policy banning personal radios in his trucks, and installed 510s in all his rigs... Can the 510 be made to talk big? Would a stinger work in a small chassis radio like the 510? Any suggestions to tell a tech how to mod it? I currently run a galaxy 88 with a RCI 2950 as a backup radio, and I like being heard. Anyone who wants to email me specs on mods can do so at iamwilebill@yahoo.com |

Iamwilebill, WELCOME TO THE COPPER FORUM! Yes, the 510 can be made to talk BIG! The KL40 below: W90-KL40 The KL60 below: W90-KL60 BOTH the KL40 & KL 60 will work well with it. And ADD a Quick Disconnect (link below) to the AMP and you can take it with you and no one will know you are using it. W90-30012 I have the Tune Up Information and the Power Modification listed in the Modification List UNDER Tools located to the left of the Forum here. SLAP a DM-452 Power Echo Hand Mic on it and No One will know it is not a $200.00 BIG RADIO that has been Peaked and Tuned. W90-30012 Hope this helps. Lon Tech808

Good answer, thank you tech808. I am familiar with the KL series, but my truck goes to the shop daily, if only for five minutes to drop paperwork. I would be interested in an internal stinger for power. What I want to do is get my own tricked out 510 and the !#@%^$ boss will never know.... I actualy like my employer, I will look at the mods you mentioned. Thanks. WB |

I don't think you'd ever fit a stinger board inside a Pro 510. Those radios can be modified though. But they don't last as long when running hard (they don't last too long as it is. Very weird purchase by your boss, must be a $$ saving thing). Anyway...here are some mods I found. These came from someone else so I don't know if they all work. Uniden PRO-500D, PRO-510XL, PRO-520XL POWER TWEAKS 1. Locate the 2.7-ohm resistor in front of the final bias resistor (15 Ohm w/RF bead) and change it to a .47-Ohm. (DO NOT change the 15-Ohm resistor!!) 2. Re-tune L9, L6, L5, L4 for maximum forward power. MODULATION Cut D14 ( I never cut anything in a radio, I prefer a power mike, but each to his own) AM POWER: L6, L5, L4 VR1: Squelch VR2: TX meter VR3: RX meter VR4: RX IF gain

Many people do like them just cause they are so small and cheap. I've had two and both died after a year. A friend had a brand new one and his died after about 2 years. Sicne I got them so cheap never bothered to find out why...but it wasn't a setup issue, it was a radio quality issue. But we have tuned up a 510/ added a power mike and it can talk pretty good, but.... on the other hand a lot of people don't like the Cobra 19 DX III as a cheap radio, but it does have a modulation pot for adjustment VR2 and when turned up it talks loud and swings, doesn't even need a power mike. We've tuned up two of these and they deadkey 5 watts swing to 10 with great audio and have had no problems whatsoever. My buddy uses one with an amp and sounds better than the big radios out there. Anyway, for a cheap radio the 510 will work, if you get the modulation up on them they talk good, I just wouldn't trust one to last too long as I said , but that's just from my experience of course, your results may vary. If I were you, I'd just put my good radio on a cig plug and as soon as I left the yard I'd plug it in, then when I get back I'd unplug it and throw it in my backpack. Lot easier than buying your own 510 and tuning it. |

I have one of those radios. Good receive, build quality doesn't seem to be bad, but I've only used it indoors on a power supply and not in a car. I haven't done any tune and peak to it so I can't verify how well those mods work. |
