i've commented many times on this forum, airplane, so what's 1 more time-
late '70's had a Y-quad on rohn pushup pole. vast improvement over big stick. blizzard of '79 bent pole at guy rings, took Y quad down , went to local aluminum tubing distributor, tied what i wanted to roof of moms car, went home, built my own 3 element using Y quad hardware. next day, roughly, wilson advertised comet in S9/cb radio mag. i experimented with spacing, custom wired rejection kits, etc. <12' boom length fit my space better than shooting star/raker 4 that's why i went 3 element. didn't exactly have a comet but it was everything i expected. bigger is always better, but if you can't fit 16' boom of shooting star, i'm sure you'll be more than happy with performance of comet. unfortunately, used PDLII's are hard to come by, but if space was the issue, i'd look for one of those before a Y quad.
GO FOR IT!!!

Any one know where to get a PDLII?
I hear alot of good about them. I like the idea
of a small beam, then I can use my U100 rotor and not worry if it will hold up. If I cant find a PDLII then I will get the Comet. I have till spring to get an antenna.Thats when weather will be good again to work outside.

Hey RW, I wonder if the Comet Reindeer would work for antenna? The antlers would receive pretty good dont you think?
LOL

Try the Internet auction sites. You'll find alot of old ant from the 70's there.

Airplane1, check the Internet Auction sites, someone might have a pdlII for sale. The closest thing to the pdlII today is the SuperHawk made by Signal Engineering out of California.

Airplane1, right now im using a Maco comet and it works like a charm, I don't have alot of room were im at so the boom length only being 11.5 feet is perfect and being 21 pounds a small rotor will work fine . rejection is great 34db and the SWR's are almost flat in the normal 40 from 26MHz to end of 11 meters they go up but nothing crazy . As for the PDLII the price people are asking for them on the big Auction site are starting to get wild $299, a little too much for me but still a good beam. Hope this helps you out.

The superhawk would be the way to go if the pdl11 are getting that high. That's crazy. The comet sounds like a good one.

Thanks for the info, I heard bad reports on the build quality on the Super Hawk and other SE antennas so I wont be getting one of them.
The PDLIIs are built good from what I hear but if they cost that much I will just get the Comet.

CM4257,
What rotor are you useing? do you think the U100 will work?
Thanks, Roger

hi Roger,

Get the Comet & go for it! WOW! didn't realize
used PDL II went for so much./ Probably, can't
get parts for them either if something were to
break./ Spring, Summer install your tower & mount
your Maco 5/8 groundplane on it until you can get a beam./ With a Trust Bearing, you can keep most of the weight off the rotor./ Hopefully the braking system will keep beam from turning in the wind for awhile, until you get a better rotor./ Good thing is if you put it up in Summer, won't be much high winds to woory about./

Airplane1, im using a CD 45-II rotor atop a 35 foot tower and i have no trouble, im sure the U-100 will work its rated at 5 sq feet wind load and the comet is 4 sq feet. So far thru all the storms and the high wind thats been comming thru lately it has worked fine and stayed in place. This is deff the bigest beam i would put on the U-100,befor upgrading i was using a old channel master type rotor on 30' of mast pipe and it was up for a year or so and had no trouble. Hope this helps

Well found a new PDL-2 for 200 big ones and going to put it up this spring unless I change my mind and get the Comet. I am so indecisive it`s pathetic!!!

Anyway,I was wondering if I can run Buryflex from house to antenna on outside about 50ft and then RG213 on inside of house to radio about 70ft.

Thanks, Roger
