Beams may help somewhat However, unfortunately, you are on the downside of the sunspot cycle. Skip in the CB Band will become more and more uncommon for some time now. It will be a while before the sunspot cycle starts to peak again bringing back the good DX.

In the meantime enjoy the peace and quiet as you talk to the local people.

I live in south Jersey and I seem to be able to shoot skip on AM all the time on my mobile CB, especially to the same person in El Paso,TX.... Can certain areas on earth be effected differently by sun spots? Are some areas not effected at all?

To answer that earlier question, sunspots will affect the overall cycle of RF propagation, but the daily values will come from the A & K indices, coupled with the MUF at the midpoints of the two contacts.

If a vertical works better than a beam, it's more than likely because of the radiation angles of the vertical "covering" for the beam's nulls in its radiation pattern based on its height above average terrain.

i hear a lot of dx on the band but i think it's just those guys that have 50-100 foot towers with big beams and big amps.average joe cb'ers like you and me most likley won't be able to talk skip til about 2012-2014 sence the sunspot cycle is 11 years long and the last peak was around 2001-2003.but keep trying you never know when you might get thru.

Bluegrass,

Average joe CBers are going to be able to talk skip when the conditions are good NO matter what equipment they are using.

When my Beams and Imax were both down for several weeks I used a STOCK Magnum 257 hooked to 100' of RG213 with a double female conector run out of the radio room thru the garage and hooked to the Wilson 1000 Mag mount on our truck and made contacts every sunday on the CEF nets and talked all over the world.

Any AVERAGE joe CBer can talk around the world with Any 100% Stock 4 watt radio and a good antenna when the conditons are there be it a Mobile or a Base antenna.

A person can also increase there chances of making contacts by having a properly set up station and equipment.

When the conditions are NOT there no matter what kind of radio you are using or how much power "Amp" you are using it will make NO difference.

I think we got off track with this one. The reason you can talk more skip SSB than on Am is the signal compression... 4 watts AM = 12 watts SSB and it is usually much quieter on SSB. It has nothing to do with ground plane vs beams.

Syberredneck,

Saddletramp025 is correct as I have talked as much skip over the years on AM and LSB using a mobile radio and Wilson 1000 Mag Mount as I have with my Quad Beams and Imax and Anttron305 antenna.

If the Conditions are there YOU ARE GOING TO TALK be it AM or SSB.

Airplane1,

Sorry but NO we are NOT at the bottom of Sunspot Cycle #23 yet.

We will not hit the Bottom until late 2006 or early 2007 so it is only going to get worse until then.

For more Information on Sunspot Cycle #23 which we are in right now Check out the LINK BELOW:

Hope this helps,

Airplane1,

When it is Bad, it is BAD and makes no difference if you are DXing or Local.

Some days I can have Beerman CEF #322 and Turtletwo CEF #470 for 25 to 35 miles or more real good and other days I lose them at 4 or 5 miles.

Mother Nature, Conditions, Station Setup, Antennas and Sunspot Cycle all determine how far you are going to talk at anytime.

When the Cycle is down like it is now a Pre-Amp is a BIG PLUS to have and use.

You will find there are times when you can't talk 5 miles Local but then someone from 1500 miles away will come Booming in.

You just never know when it is going to open up.
