Well after a week of thinking about a new radio, I have bought one. I had a few things I wanted in my new radio.
1. General coverage from 1Mhz to about 30Mhz - I want all the CB freqs, and I have been into shortwave for the last 4 months. And I hope to have a ham ticket sometime this year.
2. It needed to be CB capable as well. ie...work on Am/SSB and maybe FM. Though FM was not the big thing for me, but if I get into Ham, I may want it.
3. It had to work, have all it parts and a mic, power cord and owners manual.
4. And it had to look good, after all, I have to look at it! *G*
The radio I have bought is used, there was no way I could afford a new Ham radio. What I bought is this:
Yeasu FT-840
It has general coverage 1-30Mhz. Open transmit from 160-10meters, which includes 60 meters. MARS-CAP compatabile, plus the FM board. Comes with Mic, power cord, and the manual. It is a 100 watt rig, not that I need that much for now. But it is there if I ever do.
Now the other thing is this. This radio needs a power supply. You need at least a 20amp, from what I have read. But I felt I should get something a little bigger, just in case. And I thought an adjustable one would be good. So I found a great deal on a new one. And it is:
Pyramid PS36KX - Power Supply
32 AMP Constant/35 AMP Surge, and it has a Built-in Cooling Fan, which is a good thing indeed!
Now with all this you maybe thinking, what is Soda Pop doing? Does he have money to burn? Nope, just a little Tax Refund coming. And now is the time to by. All I have to do is get the antenna up and going. Now that I have moved my CB room to the otherside of the house. I have to relocate the antenna, but seeing how it is winter in Miane, it may be a few weeks till that happens! But for now I am a happy camper.....well Cber really!
And I am so looking forward to the CEF Nets! I have missed them, ALOT!

I bet you are really going to enjoy that radio. Bruce speaks very highly of them and I think he has one as well.

Good score on the ft-840. I'm looking hard to pick one up for myself too. It's the best radio you can buy for the money from what I've heard. |

You bought a WINNER !
The ft-840 has been made a LONG TIME and you hear very little bad about them. The only thing you might need if you have the AM filter is a BIG BEAM ........ and get one for me while your at it!
All joking aside the 840 is very stable and will work very well on all the HF bands. I use a AF DSP filter with mine with limited results but my FT-100D has DSP and it does NO BETTER than the 840. The 840 IS supported by Yeasu you can get parts and filters and even the FM board if you wish. I have AM/FM/SSB/CW in mine with the 500cps CW filter and 6khz AM filters and FM board. For what you need all you MIGHT need is the AM filter.
Its a well thought out radio simple to use and will last you for MANY years! |

The Kenwood 850 I have calls for a 20 amp power supply too, and I have never seen the meter go over 15, and it is a 100 watt rig also. I had bad luck with Pyramids, check out an astron, they have been bulletproof for me (knock on wood).

I aggree with pig the astron 20 runs the 840 with room to spare. |

kudos on the astron 20. it's my main supply with the ts-2000, 706mkiig, and 840. plenty of power. |

Well I think the power supply I got will be more then enough to do the job, and a little juice left over for other things. I also have a 12amp power supply that is almost new. So I think I am all set for power supplies! *G*.
Bruce, is this AM filter hard to put in? And what do they go for? And mine does have the FM, which is nice. |

yep...it aint like you are going to be TRANSMITTING on all 3 at the same time ...so it does not matter !!
