Every mode on this radio performs great. If you desire premium sideband operation get a 4800. If all you want is am go with the 4300. I use my 4800 as a base and I always make contact with whoever I call.Unless I'm working skip and mother nature is not very generous do I get restless and try later. I went to a 1.5 watt dead key with about a 35 watt~ 40 watt swing so sideband sounds good. I know a tech who claims he can get a 68 watt swing from his 4800. Anybody else get this high a result?
About that background noise it does have a little bit of a hiss. I only notice this when I monitor and do not hear anyone for a while. When I hear a call I usually end up turning my volume down and the background goes un noticable. Of all my radios my 4800 in my opinion is so far the best rig I ever used. The only thing I can do without on this radio is the echo, roger beep, and talk back. Oh yeah and the stock mic that I find to be silly on this radio.I switched to a noise canceling Astatic mic and the audio qaulity is way better. As far as driving an amp the 4800 puts the smack down on my Cobra XL350. Now this radio is really loud. I noted the lights in my radio room go dim while I'm transmitting. Its nice because I'm not a loud mouth. I can whisper and still all works great. Patzerozero recommended the Texas Star amp so I think I may have to go pick one up soon. May have to upgrade to a larger power supply also.

BC, shame on you, your prejudice is showing, if a guy has a good radio, and he is happy with it, god bless em! Besides I dont like the retro look of the S9, my Connex performs great, one of the best mobiles I have ever had!

Hey like I said "Not neccisarily" Which I don’t even think is spelled right but I understand exactly what you are saying, the 4800 was one of my choices when I got my S9 I was trying to choose between the S9, 4800 and 95T, I took a gamble with the S9 and since have been VERY happy I did! The 4800 is a great radio, I just happen to believe the S9 is better having used both. As far as the 95T goes well I am happy I didn't choose it, from what I have heard so far it seems to suffer from a lot of the same problems most Galaxies suffer from IE: Great radio, poor construction. Besides, what's so retro about the S9 :-) seriously though the 4800 seems more retro to me. Any way as I state in most my post, "This is my opinion only and if you don’t like it oh well your wrong :-) ““at least in my opinion :-)

The s9 has a meter the shape of your glasses, now that is retro, I prefer to consider the looks of the Connex as Classic!

Hey Bc910 I first started out using it mobile. When I realized the performance this radio had I decide to use it as a base. It was starving for power too, with amp use of course.Inside this setup drinks 25 amps on AM. Using sideband at full power it takes big gulps about 50 or 60 amps so I use only enough wattage neccasary to make contact. Barefoot the radio alone uses around 8 to 12 amps I think. Sooooo I put the trusty Cobra 148 back in the car. I'll try to post pics but the my camera has to many mega bytes to fit in.Also I was worried about the thieves around here.A thief is the lowest person of all mankind.
