What are the possible reasons for very weak AM recieve in a 2950 ?

The ssb recieves fine

The cw part recieves fine

The AM recieve audio requires you to turn the VOLUME knob all the way to the right ( wide open )...it does recieve the same stations , their voice is just weaker to the speaker ( not like the rf gain is turned down ).

Personal guess it --- it has been used too near a linear amplifier for an extended amount of time, and the agc might be weak, or just be nearly deaf on AM recieve...you can listen to the same stations on SSB and they are significantly louder ( normal level to speaker ).

Other ideas are welcome....tx is great, just AM recieve is lousy...rig is a ranger 2950 ( no dx model )
