What happened to these mags? I just came back from the local bookstore and they didn't have them. Last time I bought them was back in late 2003. Are they not in print anymore?

I was also looking for any type of Ham/SWL and I didn't see any in the display. I may have to take a walk to Chapter's, to see if they have them

Radio Enthusiasts,

NEWINGTON, CT, Oct 10, 2003--After completing 43 years of publication, 73 Amateur Radio Today magazine is calling it quits. Plans to publish a joint October/November issue fell through this week, and the September 2003 issue was the magazine's last. According to self-proclaimed "El Supremo and Founder" Wayne S. Green II, W2NSD, it was a simple matter of economics.

But, CQ Magazine is still being published.

If your magazine shop did not sell many of them they may have just stopped ordering them.

You can still order a subscription to CQ over the internet.

Just type CQ Magazine in your internet search box.

Hope this helps,

Lon

Hey...thanks for the info Lon. It really stinks to see that interest in these publications has waned. I mean, c'mon...I can get magazines on collecting stamps at my local book store but not any about amateur radio.

These are sad times we live in.

You're right Bruce, it is a good one, and another one I didn't see at my local mag shop.

Mags like boys life and others geared for pre-teen gents used to promote getting into ham. In elementary school local hams woiuld come set up a rig for us to check out. My friend's dad was a ham and would ALWAYS encourage us to take a look and listen. Many friends I have got into radio early, dropped it in their mid teens for cars and women and got right back in. I feel ham radio is missing the exposure to the younger folk that it used to have. Many parents are spending thousands of dollars on computers and video games (I admit my kid has a really mean computer at the age of 4) but that money could be spent on something that they could use for the rest of their life; respect, patience, and willingnes to learn and achieve.

I came int my kids life a year ago after meeting his mother (father diseased in infancy). In the past year he has discovered radio and is completely mesmerized, it hit him during the install of the Imax2K. It was up and cable was buried, flipped on the radio and his jaw dropped, "you mean those people are talking into that stick and you can talk back?.........woah, cool!"

He's strong with his ABC's and I'm thinking about seeing how tough it would be to teach him code now, I mean at his age ABC "IS" code it's just another alphabet right?

BTW he can work that computer too! He knows his way around windows XP and can get music and pictures off the network for his enjoyment, no internet access so he's stuck with what's in the house. I figured exposure to computers would be better than exposure to the television and a controller. He watches about 3 hours of TV a week! the rest is creative time.

OUR HOBBY CAN FLOURISH ONLY IF WE INTREST OTHERS!

Chad
